ETA 2018: SHADES OF WICKED, Night Rebel book one featuring Ian and Veritas, releases on October 30th, 2018. Yes, this will be a series :).

Old reply: After the events in Home for the Holidays (my novella in The Bite Before Christmas anthology) Ian is starting to move in a direction where he could grow into hero material for his own novel. However, he’s not there yet, which is why I haven't committed to an Ian book yet. I do have part of a story and a specific heroine in mind, though, so Ian fans have cause to hope :). Oh, but I’m not saying who the heroine is aside from assuring people that it is not Justina.(less)

Dead Beautiful
Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon by Yvonne Woon

goodreads summary-On the morning of her sixteenth birthday, Renée Winters was still an ordinary girl. She spent her summers at the beach, had the perfect best friend, and had just started dating the cutest guy at school. No one she'd ever known had died. But all that changes when she finds her parents dead in the Redwood Forest, in what appears to be a strange double murder.

After the funeral Renée’s wealthy grandfather sends her to Gottfried Academy, a remote and mysterious boarding school in Maine, where she finds herself studying subjects like Philosophy, Latin, and the “Crude Sciences.”

It’s there that she meets Dante Berlin, a handsome and elusive boy to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. As they grow closer, unexplainable things begin to happen, but Renée can’t stop herself from falling in love. It’s only when she discovers a dark tragedy in Gottfried’s past that she begins to wonder if the Academy is everything it seems.

Little does she know, Dante is the one hiding a dangerous secret, one that has him fearing for her life.

Dead Beautiful is both a compelling romance and thought-provoking read, bringing shocking new meaning to life, death, love, and the nature of the soul.

Generation Dead
Generation Dead (Generation Dead, #1) by Daniel Waters by Daniel Waters

goodreads summary-Phoebe Kendall is just your typical Goth girl with a crush. He’s strong and silent…and dead.

All over the country, a strange phenomenon is occurring. Some teenagers who die aren't staying dead. But when they come back to life, they are no longer the same. Feared and misunderstood, they are doing their best to blend into a society that doesn’t want them.
The administration at Oakvale High attempts to be more welcoming of the “differently biotic." But the students don’t want to take classes or eat in the cafeteria next to someone who isn’t breathing. And there are no laws that exist to protect the “living impaired” from the people who want them to disappear—for good.
When Phoebe falls for Tommy Williams, the leader of the dead kids, no one can believe it; not her best friend, Margi, and especially not her neighbor, Adam, the star of the football team. Adam has feelings for Phoebe that run much deeper than just friendship; he would do anything for her. But what if protecting Tommy is the one thing that would make her happy?

Maze Runner

The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner by James Dashner

goodreads summary-Imagine waking up one day in total darkness, unsure of where you are and unable to remember anything about yourself except your first name. You're in a bizarre place devoid of adults called the Glade. The Glade is an enclosed structure with a jail, a graveyard, a slaughterhouse, living quarters, and gardens. And no way out. Outside the Glade is the Maze, and every day some of the kids -- the Runners -- venture into the labyrinth, trying to map the ever-changing pattern of walls in an attempt to find an exit from this hellish place. So far, no one has figured it out. And not all of the Runners return from their daily exertions, victims of the maniacal Grievers, part animal, part mechanical killing machines.

Thomas is the newest arrival to the Glade in this Truman-meets-Lord of the Flies tale. A motley crew of half a dozen kids is all he has to guide him in this strange world. As soon as he arrives, unusual things begin to happen, and the others grow suspicious of him. Though the Maze seems somehow familiar to Thomas, he's unable to make sense of the place, despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. What is this place, and does Thomas hold the key to finding a way out?

In The Maze Runner, Dashner has crafted a creative and engaging novel that's both mysterious and thought provoking.

Luke and Jon
Luke and Jon by Robert Williams by Robert Williams
[image error]

goodreads summary-Luke's mum is dead. He finds himself in a small, scruffy northern hill town, with a near silent father, who he fears might be trying to drink himself to death. Then he meets Jon. Jon is massively strange. He wears 1950s clothes, has a side-parting and a twitch. The kids at school call him 'Slackjaw'. When Luke discovers his secret, Jon changes his life in more ways than he can imagine. Luke and Jon is a coming of age novel about family, bereavement and how lives can change forever in a single second. Written with great power, warmth and humour, it signals a hugely engaging and original new voice. Compelling and emotionally acute, it is a unique debut.

Just in Case by Meg Rosoff by Meg Rosoff

goodreads summary-Rising star Meg Rosoff’s highly amusing novel is about survival, friendship and the boundaries of love

Meg Rosoff’s wit and imagination are eye-popping. She is already a star in the UK—her first novel How I Live Now sold hundreds of thousands of copies there—and she’s won numerous awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Fans of Mark Haddon will devour Just in Case in one or two sittings.

And so he decides to trick Fate. He changes his name and his appearance, makes new friends, and dares to fall in love with the seductive Agnes Day—all in the hope that he’ll become unrecognizable to Fate and thereby save himself from doom. Crossing Stones
Crossing Stones by Helen Frost by Helen Frost

goodreads summary-Maybe you won’t rock a cradle, Muriel.

Some women seem to prefer to rock the boat.

Eighteen-year-old Muriel Jorgensen lives on one side of Crabapple Creek. Her family’s closest friends, the Normans, live on the other. For as long as Muriel can remember, the families’ lives have been intertwined, connected by the crossing stones that span the water. But now that Frank Norman—who Muriel is just beginning to think might be more than a friend—has enlisted to fight in World War I and her brother, Ollie, has lied about his age to join him, the future is uncertain. As Muriel tends to things at home with the help of Frank’s sister, Emma, she becomes more and more fascinated by the women’s suffrage movement, but she is surrounded by people who advise her to keep her opinions to herself. How can she find a way to care for those she loves while still remaining true to who she is?

Written in beautifully structured verse, Crossing Stones captures nine months in the lives of two resilient families struggling to stay together and cross carefully, stone by stone, into a changing world.

Tunnels
Tunnels (Tunnels, #1) by Roderick Gordon by Roderick Gordon

Goodreads summary-14-year-old Will Burrows has little in common with his strange, dysfunctional family. In fact, the only bond he shares with his eccentric father is a passion for archaeological excavation. So when his dad mysteriously vanishes, Will is compelled to dig up the truth behind his disappearance. He unearths the unbelievable: a subterranean society that time forgot. "The Colony" has existed unchanged for a century, but it's no benign time capsule of a bygone era. Because the Colony is ruled by a merciless overclass, the Styx. Will must free his father--is he also about to ignite a revolution?

Ranga May your day be filled with blessings,
Like the sun that lights the sky.
And may you always have the courage,
To spread your wings and fly.

May your troubles be less,
Your blessings be more
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door!

Blue be the Sky above you,
Soft be the Road below you,
Affection be the Breeze around you,
I pray all the Happiness surrounds you.

May love always ease your pain
And kindness be all you know
May you never have a reason to complain
And the sun follows you wherever you go.

May God give you the lasting reward,
For the beauty of your heart and soul;
Your thoughts and views speak for you,
In this world, you have a distinct role.

May you always have an Angel by your side
Someone there to catch you if you fall
Encouraging your dreams inspiring your happiness
Holding you hand and helping you through it all.

Somebody cares if you’re happy today,
If your heart is cheerful and light.
Somebody cares if you’re feeling good
and everything’s going just right.

And somebody hopes this message will show,
in a warm little heart-to-heart way,
That you’re thought of, remembered,
And happily wished for a wonder day!!

May God grant you always
A sunbeam to warm you
A moonbeam to charm you
A sheltering angel
So nothing can harm you.

Laughter to cheer you,
faithful friends near you
And when ever you pray
heaven to hear you.

Have a perfect morning
And an even lovelier day...
May happiness surround you
Always...not just for today!

Sophia I enjoy the stories you weave in your Night Huntress world and this other story, Night's Darkest Embrace that is in another direction.

Kim Thank you for accepting my friend request. I loved in Halfway to the Grave where you mention the five cemeteries (one of them the Simms cemetery) forming a pentagram. I'm an Ohio University alumnus and knew exactly where you meant. When I was in college, I loved hearing the haunted Athens stories. I even when to Alden Library to look at maps to see the layout of the cemeteries. I'm such a nerd.
