Susan Katz Miller is a former Newsweek reporter, and an interfaith speaker, consultant, coach, and activist. She has written for The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Conde Nast Traveler, Discover, New Scientist, International Wildlife, and many other publications. That wo…moreThe way I see things, there is no such thing as an "unbeliever." Everyone has beliefs. Do you mean someone who has different beliefs than you? That would apply, in the most universal sense, to every relationship, because no two people have identical beliefs, even if they share a religious label. Yes, there are challenges that come with the differences, including misunderstandings, and the challenge of figuring out how to make decisions relating to religious practice as a couple or family unit that includes more than one set of beliefs and/or practices. But there is also stimulus to deep discussion, creativity, and bridge-building. My second book, The Interfaith Family Journal, is designed to help any and all couples/families figure out how to do this with grace and satisfaction.(less)

Hi Susan, Love the first chapter. So critically important. Very well written. But in the introduction on page xv is there a typo? "the percentage of adults in"Jewish" households self-identifying as "Jewish and something else" or as "partially Jewish" in the New York area shot up from 2 percent in 2002 to 2 percent in 2011." Can't both be 2%, right? Would love the real numbers...thanks!

More Families Choosing to Do Both

We have known for years that a significant percentage of interfaith families choose to practice both religions. In just one recent example, a study released this fall of the Jewish community in Northeast Florida (including Jacksonville) found 42% of interfaith families raising their children “Jewish and something else,” versus only 28% raising them “Jewish only.”
