All I can say is that I really did try but I only made made it a third of the way through. All I can say is that I really did try but I only made made it a third of the way through. Please do forgive me, I am living through a plague after all. Every page was becoming a struggle and my mind just couldn’t take any more self conflagration. It was like I was slowly making my essence and vie for life fade away.

I was expecting it to be a fast paced court thriller about an alleged rape, featuring fantastical court argument. What I got was unending nonsense about a young girl’s childhood. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against young girls, I’m not a misogynistic pig but this was a particularly boring one. It is brilliantly written but so boring. It’s so boring that it seems quite fitting that school children are tortured into reading it. The film was so good but this novel is dross. To anyone that cares, it gets a zero. I’m sure some people will like, I just don’t know how.

So, I started reading “The Great Gatsby” instead and was I certainly happy that I did. It is set in the Roaring Twenties just outside of the Big Apple and was first published in 1925. It is told through the eyes of Nick Carraway who finds himself immersed in a great love story of sorts. He has moved to a new town and finds himself living beside a great mansion where raucous parties are a weekly event. After visiting a distant cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband Tom Buchanan, he finds out from a fellow visitor Jordan, who he subsequently romances that it is owned by a Mr. Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire.

Subsequently he is invited to one of the parties, where he quickly realizes that nobody actually seems to know much about Gatsby. There are rumours about how he made his money but nothing certain. Little does he know that Gatsby has a secret reason for inviting him and that is to meet Daisy. They had been an item prior to The War and before he was rich.

What follows is a story of intrigue with the odd twist sprinkled in. It is now considered an American classic but didn’t do great when it was first published and the author died destitute. Let’s hope that is not the fate awaiting yours truly. During World War II, free copies were given to American soldiers and this was the beginning of a meteoric rise. I can see how the novel would make a lasting impression on young sold, stuck in a damp, squalid trench. Later, a few films were made telling the story.

My score is four stars out of five. I did feel that some of the characters were a bit too one dimensional at times. In particular Nick’s love interest Jordan. We learn little about her except that she is beautiful and plays golf. ...more

And so it was that a few months previously I was watching some opaque TV channel about Italian crime fiction and its great novels, of which “The Day of the Owl was one”.

Italian crime is grittier and the line more blurred between good and bad than its American or British equivalents. “The Day of the Owl” is quintessential Italian crime fiction. It was originally published in Italian in 1961 and as best as I could tell, it was set in the nineteen fifties. The location is Sicily, the traditional heartland of the Mafia. It gives an insight into the poverty and rural nature of the area. The people struggle to eke out a living as peasants and smuggle cigarettes. The landed gentry sent their eldest son to the monastery to become educated and then skipped out to become a lawyer. There is no banking system other than borrowing at extortionate interest and every penny must be paid on time. However, the very existence of the mafia is disputed just like it would have wanted.

The story begins with a man getting shot running for a bus one morning in a small, Sicilian town. Even though the bus was packed, nobody in the bus including the driver saw the murderer. The case is given to a Carabinieri captain, Bellodi from Parma. He is not from Sicily and believes in the power of the State and the rule of law. In Sicily, family connections and informal relationships come first.

Bellodi ensures a proper investigation is carried out, against push-back from the establishment. The man who was the owner of the small company refused to pay protection money, and despite being small scale, was set an example of.

For a time it looks as though, he might make a major breakthrough and even arrest the local don after some crafty, on-the-line methods. But murky forces ensure that it all goes away and any mention of organized crime dissipates.

In true Italian style, there is no happy ending only what might have been.

Probably, just as interesting as the novel, is what happened afterward. It was part of the slow awakening of Italian society to the threat posed by the Mafia. ...more

Well, what can I say? I reckon this is the best science fiction novel I’ve read since “Nineteen Eighty-Four.” It’s totally different but just as captivating and original. I reckon this is the best science fiction novel I’ve read since “Nineteen Eighty-Four.” It’s totally different but just as captivating and original. The first thing that is different about this story is that the main characters are all terminally ill with only a few months left to live. Hard to imagine them saving the world, right? Adam's body is ravaged by Muscular Dystrophy, his muscles rapidly decaying. So too, DeShawn. The others suffer from incurable diseases, mostly cancer.

But Adam’s father had a plan to save his son. Transfer the human mind to a machine that could live on when the body has died. But, during his research he inadvertently creates Sigma, a high level Artificial Intelligence that plots to destroy humanity. Hey, what else is an AI to do?

It quickly takes control of a Russian nuclear missile base, killing all the soldiers stationed there and threatens nuclear annihilation if any aggressive action is taken to stop it.

Time is now running out and the minds of the six volunteers are transferred so they can stop Sigma before it’s too late.

Only Adam’s mind transfer is documented and it is excellently written. There is just about the right amount of ambiguity over whether it is the same mind in the machine, or is just a copy that has just come into existence. The writer also deals very effectively with action and other sequences in the robotic mind.

What follows is all action. At times, it turns dark but just the right amount to keep you glued to its pages.

Interestingly, the author doesn’t consider his work to be science fiction –

This novel is not science fiction. I’m a science journalist, as well as a novelist, so I like to insert lots of facts into my books. The technologies described in “The Six” are real. The electronic brains of the Pioneers are based on experimental circuits now being developed in laboratories. Sooner or later, human intelligence is going to live inside machines. It’s just a matter of time.

I think he is wrong but it does make for a great yarn. The human brain is still not fully understood. I remember watching a documentary about it once. The smallest brain in the animal kingdom was in some sort of worm. They deprived it of all external stimulation. Still, now and again, there was a burst of activity from its neurons. It was thinking to itself. This is something that the strongest computers cannot replicate.

But, perhaps something just as good has recently happened. Due to advances in gene therapy, Muscular Dystrophy may soon become a disease of the past.

I give “The Six” five stars out of five. And the best thing is that it is part of a trilogy. ...more

Do you judge a book by its cover? If so, get prepared for an unreal ride that blows the roof off what a quadriplegic’s life should look like. Is it inspirational, motivational, courageous, or outrageous? You’ll be shaking your head at his decision making but that’s the beauty of life. Are you living or are you just alive? Enjoy the unbelievable true story of an over 30-year-old quadriplegic’s journey from his accident at age 17 that explores the fascinating insight into the psychology of a man. Be warned, this book contains graphic sex talk and delves into what a horny quadriplegic would do to find love.

It proceeds to tell us about his various relationships with married women, his students, caregivers, co-workers, and others. He has life-changing injuries as a 17-year-old that leave him as an incomplete quadriplegic. The way that the injury affects him is that he has feelings throughout his body but extremely little movement below his neck. He also has to deal with spasms and a considerable amount of pain.

He is an anti-hero, and my feeling is that the book will be enjoyed more by men than by women. He can be quite manipulative, basically saying anything to get laid especially when he is in his early twenties. Strangle, he believes it’s his opening lines that are where he’s at fault, but I feel it's his love bombing that crosses the line. He also over-promises and under-delivers.

He is at his most callous with his first partner. She has mental health issues and he’s not that attracted to her, but getting laid is the most important thing. When they inevitably break up, she turns off his wheelchair, leaving him stranded. He is prepared to play with fire.

But, he appears to try harder to settle down as the years go by increasingly blaming the relationship failures on himself. I’m not sure. An inaccessible and hostile world had a lot to do with it too. The girlfriends’ houses being inaccessible, his care needs. It’s a death by a thousand cuts.

My favorite part of the book is the affair with the neighbor. Reading about the husband feeding him at her party was just something else. It’s a pity the book didn’t explore why he didn’t try to become more independent. He seems to be only prepared to move out with a caregiver who is a lover. This would be a heavyweight for anyone to bear. The standard advice would be to keep the roles as separate as possible.

It’s his proclivity to mix these roles that lands him in difficulties when a former caregiver and lover betrays his trust and sends his college, details of his affair with a student. I think he should have reached some sort of compromise with her before this happened. She had warned him she might do this and he left her in pretty big difficulties. It has lifelong repercussions

By the end of the book, he sounds quite defeated. Unfortunately, living with a severe physical disability rarely has a happy ending. It takes its toll and by the end, I think he is too critical of his younger self.

Christy Brown is one of my literary heroes. I purchased this ebook on Amazon while looking for some of his writings. I purchased this ebook on Amazon while looking for some of his writings. It is written by a former English literature student who did her dissertation on his writing and later wrote this book. For those who haven’t heard of Christy Brown, he is a famous Dubliner who was born in the early 1930s. He had a severe form of cerebral palsy that left him entirely spastic in his limbs. Famously, he used his left foot to write, type, and paint.

He is most famous novel was called “My Left Foot”, which later was adapted into a triple Academy Award-winning film. It was an autobiographical account of his early life up to his early twenties. His greatest literary achievement however was called “Down All the Days”. Unfortunately, this latter work is still not available as an ebook so I haven’t read it.

It gives a great overview of his life and includes much poetry and other letters that had not previously been made available to the public. You get an insight into what his life was like post “My Left Foot”, how his money helped support his mother and many siblings, and some of the riotous drinking that Christy Brown did as well as the most important romantic relationships that he had.

The main romantic relationships that he had were with an American married woman called Beth Moore and his future wife Mary. Whereas his mother was the pivotal influence in his early life, these dominated the second half of his life for both better and worse.

Beth Moore started a correspondence with him after his book “My Left Foot” came out. It became romantic and she invited him to the United States to visit her. It then became sexual. From his writing perspective, she was a positive influence getting him to cut back on the drinking and concentrate more on the writing. It appears she played a crucial role in getting “Down All the Days” written. However, when it became a commercial success, he was loathe to give her any credit or any of the spotlight. Perhaps, he was worried she might steal his glory. This issue or what could be construed as a betrayal was the death knell for their relationship. It had lasted many, many years by which time he had met his future wife.

Christy’s brother describes Mary as a lesbian prostitute. However, it’s clear that she would be more accurately described as a bisexual who at least occasionally had dabbled in prostitution. She was also an alcoholic just like himself. Christy quickly became infatuated with her and asked her to marry him. She agreed, after taking some time to think about it. They were married until his death. Together, he appears to have spiraled downwards. However, things were always going to be rough for the two alcoholics. He wrote little of note during their time together and Mary wasn’t as interested in his writing as Beth Moore had been.

The book also covers where the film came from. It was indeed based on his autobiography “My Left Foot”. Some extra scenes were added or invented, and that is why I thought “Down All the Days” may have played a greater role. The film was made on a shoestring budget and was never expected to do so well. It made stars out of many of the actors including Daniel Day-Lewis.

On reflection, what a great man Christy Brown was. Despite having a very severe disability with very little support he became a renowned writer, poet, and painter. He also financially supported his mother and siblings, and fulfilled his dream of marriage to a woman he loved till the end. ...more

Socially, they were on friendly terms but Brown was anxious to match his success. Behan, just like Brown was a voracious drinker, and it played a significant role in his early death at the age of forty-one.

This book was released posthumously. It tells the story of his life, in his inner voice after Borstal Boy (when he was imprisoned for attempting to bomb the Liverpool docks). Brendan dictated this book during the last years of his life. Thankfully, the book had been completed, but it had not been edited by Behan. It tends to wander at times and is a bit loose here and there. It can meander from one subject to the next and at times it can be hard to keep track of.

More importantly, for me anyway, it leaves many questions unanswered. He never states why he drifted away from the IRA, just that he did. There is nothing about how he feels about his poor health in the end or about his illegitimate child (a further child is born to his wife post-death).

However, it is very well written and has many very funny sub-stories. One of the funnier aspects is how he gets on with some of the British police and prison guards. For instance, after another stint in prison, he is given the option to get out if he agrees to leave the country. A policeman goes with him to the port and they both get drunk along the way. He is supposed to spend his last night in another prison but they won’t let him in as they say he is too drunk! The book is full of such anecdotes and can be very laugh-out-loud at times.

Another is when he’s working for a pimp in Paris from one of the pubs. A man is there with his mother, so they convince her that her son heading to a late-night mass only for men.

He never talks about his liaisons, but the book gives me the impression that there were many. It’s a pity cause I’m sure there must have been some stories left out.

The book ends quite abruptly. Probably, on his death, he didn’t want to say too much about those he loved most.

I think it can be best described as a political action thriller. And not one that the Chinese Communist Party would be too impressed about either. If I suddenly disappear, you can guess what happened! It starts and ends at a frenetic pace. In between not so much and it was tough to keep on reading at times. The book is very long, contains a multitude of characters, and can at times be difficult to keep on top of. The intrigue revolves around two different factions in the Chinese government – one wants the status quo, the other liberalization and democracy.

It also relies somewhat on coincidence, which I found a tad unfulfilling. One man after very many years of inactivity finds himself at the heart of two conspiracies at the one time. A bit of a long shot.

There were things I really enjoyed. The action scenes are enjoyable and very well written. I also found the relationship between Ford and Xia, his old love to be suitably complex and interesting.
