My son and I met Rick Ankiel during the 2018 MLB All-Star Game fanfest. I remember asking him about what he thought of two-way player Ohtani, and he gave a thoughtful answer. I didn't know everything about his story, such as how good he was coming ou ...more |

Less Beaten Paths of America:
Interesting book! I took a long trip myself with my two kids in 2013, almost 7,000 miles in less than 17 days. I am making a list of long road trips and would like to include this - check the info in the working list at https://kevinjshay44.medium.com/list-of-longest-road-trips-e93ec07c372f to make sure it's accurate. Do you want to include the vehicle you drove? Let me know. BTW I grew up in Dallas, went to LH High.

1,000 Places to See Before You Die: A Traveler's Life List:
"If you love luxury hotels, you will love this book. Otherwise - if you are looking for the places in the world to see before you die, look at UNESCO's ever-growing list of heritage sites, which isn't quite to 1000 yet, but will be in just a few years"

I agree. And the concept that your life is somehow inadequate if you don't travel to many of these places is ludicrous.

“That’s the key to walking through the Wall.... You have to first see it as not being a Wall, even though everyone you know still sees it as a Wall.”

“A rising sun died in America and the world on Nov. 22, 1963. Some say that we have never again seen such a rising sun in the sky as we did that morning. Even if it was cloudy or raining that day, the country and world were more innocent and optimistic at that moment than they have been since then. Some say that a piece of all of us – the hope that helps us get through another day - died that day. Others say the act just opened the eyes of many about what the U.S. government and other governments had done in our names for a long time.”

“The moon, almost full, shines high in the sky in front of me. I roll down the window and rest my arm on top of the door frame. The night air blowing in softly through the open window feels cool on my face. For the moment, all seems right with the world.”

“Make sure you control the radio on a long road trip. You don't want to listen to some old-fashioned music the whole time.”
