Summer Slide?

Can reading prevent the seemingly-inevitable summer slide in learning and reading skills that children experience? Check out the data for yourself.

Inspiration

I just met a little girl who was holding a copy of my book in her hands and said to me, "Wow, you're the author of this book?" She was so happy to meet me and so eager to share her own stories that she had made up in her head, that I sat there and listened to her stories for 10-15 minutes. I told her that I was her age when I first thought of some of the characters in my books but that I had never written them down until recently. I encouraged her to pursue her dream of writing if that is what she really wanted to do. I told her to write them down now and to get started! I could see the passion that she had for her stories even at such a young age. I hope that I was able to inspire her and encourage her to write those cute little stories down that she so vividly portrayed to me. Of note, her mother and grandmother read to her often when she was an infant and toddler, which serves as a living example that reading to your child just might light a fire inside of their creative minds!

Reach Out and Read!

What better way to kick off a blog hosted by a Pediatirician and author, than with information about the Reach Out and Read Program. I work with this program every single day and support their goals. If you are unfamiliar with this program and/or just want to learn more, check out their website!

Story Time is Here!

Welcome to my new blog, Story Time! Let me introduce myself first. My name is Brian and I am a Pediatrician, parent, and author or children's books. Through my interactions with children from each of these different roles I have had the opportunity to really see how amazing children can be. With these three very different and unique vantage points of a child's life, I have become motivated to start this blog in order to help parents find the best, most entertaining, colorful, useful, and thought-provoking children's books available. I believe not only in the physical health of children but in the development of their character and the stimulation of their seemingly endless imaginations. I would like to utilize this blog to answer questions that parents may have about what books are good to read, what lessons may or may my be valuable to find in books, and simply to promote how reading to your child can change their lives forever. Please feel free to ask questions and hopefully you will find my advice and book recommendations to be valuable for both you and our children!
