Born and raised in Minnesota, educated at Moorhead State (Moorhead, MN) and North Dakota State University. I developed a passion for science fiction in junior high and have been hooked ever since. I started writing science fiction sometime around 1986 or so and about a dozen of my short stories were published in pioneering online magazines such as "Athene" and "Intertext."

I have been employed as a potato scientist at the University of Idaho since 1991. I currently serve on the editorial boards of two national trade journals and have written more than two hundred educational and informative articles for the popular press. I live with my wife and two cats (or is it the other way around?) in southeastern Idaho, where most of the potatoes are.

The most effective way I've found to get past these bumps, especially when working on a novel, is go to another part of the book and do some editing. There is so much to do when writing a book that you can always find something useful to do.(less)

After one of them, as I exited the theater with my wife and daughter I remember saying, "They hired actors that could act and they had convincing special effects and expensive sets so why didn't they spend a couple thousand more for a decent story?!" I then uttered the fateful words, "Heck, I could write a better story than that!"

It proved to be harder than I thought... (less)

Phil Nolte - Editor

A question authors get asked all the time is: "Where do you get your ideas?" The answer in my case is: "From pretty much everywhere." It could be a news item, it could be something I remembered from junior high, something I read by another author, or something that came up in a conversation. It shouldn't come as a shock, but authors borrow Read more of this blog post »
