For a very long time, I made the conscious choice to prioritise safety and stability above all else. In the book, Rachel’s relationship with Max embodies this. They love each other deeply; they are best friends, confidants, and perfect roommates. But there is a hidden, suffocating cost to choosing safety for too long: when sexual intimacy and raw passion are entirely absent, that comfort quietly curdles into resentment. You begin to feel confined by the very walls you built to protect yourself.

My own turning point came when my life caught up with my physical self. I spent 25 years living a life that simply didn't fit, and eventually, my body broke. Dealing with chronic health challenges forced a complete and inevitable breakdown. I came to realise that my physical collapse wasn't a failure of health; it was my body finally screaming for what it had been denied for so long—truth, autonomy, and a genuine awakening.

When I sat down to write Rachel, I infused her with that exact, terrifying transition. Her journey mirrors that moment of realisation: that survival and stability are not the same thing as truly being alive.

Alex represents the catalyst. He is the spark that shatters her comfortable routine and forces her to experience the palpable, explicit chemistry she thought she’d never have. He forces her to look at her golden cage and decide whether she is finally ready to let it burn. I wanted to write a romance that didn't shy away from the messy, heavy, and intensely passionate reality of finding your desires in midlife. The intimacy she finds with Alex is intense and explicit because the emotional stakes of reclaiming your own body and life are just as fierce.(less)
