In the worst case, if I am not feeling up to working on a given book, I just switch to another one. Usually, that's the piece I'm supposed to be writing anyway. But even that is rare. I think that because I outline, even if I'm not feeling super creative, I still know what the next chapter I have to write is about, and I just start putting words onto the screen. That helps a lot.(less)

In general, I was inspired to write the Science of Magic series because I was having a hard time finding fantasy books I could really get into. There were definitely some great authors out there, and there still are, but I prefer fantasy tales with fast moving, adventure-driven plots. And those are hard to find. So that's what I set out to create. Dune was an inspiration, of course. The way Muad'Dib and the other characters use sound as weapons always fascinated me. I also wanted to write a story where there were reactions to actions and repercussions for using magic. Makes the story more interesting that way, I think. :-)(less)

If you like John Wick, you’ll either love Nobody or hate it. Promise.

“Nobody” is a fun, violent film that is a mix between the first “John Wick” Movie and the 1993 classic, “Falling Down,” starring Michael Douglas. And this makes sense, being that the same guy who wrote “Nobody,” Derek Kolstad, also wrote “John Wick.” That’s great, but “Nobody” recycles so many of the almost exact tropes […]

“True love always led to true loss. The two were inseparable.”
Michael W. Layne, The Conservation of Magic

“most humans would never know magic existed and could only hope to see the reality of this world through the occasional dreams of their artists.”
Michael W. Layne, The Complexity of Magic

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
W.B. Yeats

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
Albert Einstein

“In my next life I want to live my life backwards. You start out dead and get that out of the way. Then you wake up in an old people's home feeling better every day. You get kicked out for being too healthy, go collect your pension, and then when you start work, you get a gold watch and a party on your first day. You work for 40 years until you're young enough to enjoy your retirement. You party, drink alcohol, and are generally promiscuous, then you are ready for high school. You then go to primary school, you become a kid, you play. You have no responsibilities, you become a baby until you are born. And then you spend your last 9 months floating in luxurious spa-like conditions with central heating and room service on tap, larger quarters every day and then Voila! You finish off as an orgasm!”
Woody Allen
