Hi! Thanks for visiting me on Goodreads! Here's a little bit about me...

I am the author of five novels about ambitious women: ANNA BRIGHT IS HIDING SOMETHING, WE CAME HERE TO SHINE, THE SUBWAY GIRLS, THE BALANCE PROJECT, and ON GRACE. My writing has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times, HuffPost, PopSugar, Writer’s Digest, Harper's Bazaar, and Glamour. I'm also a screenwriter currently shopping my first pilot and feature-length screenplay. A mother of three grown sons, I was born in Philadelphia, grew up in Los Angeles, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, and now live with my husband in Charlotte, NC. When I'm not reading or writing you can find me pretending to be a graphic designer on Canva, doing a cr

I got the inspiration originally from reading Esther Williams's autobiography. She swam in Billy Rose's Aquacade at the 1940 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco. If you're interested in learning more, I've written more about my inspiration and fun facts on the fair here: https://susieschnall.com/books/we-cam... and also there's a reading guide with more historical background here https://images.macmillan.com/folio-as.... Also, last thing, check out my instagram @susieormanschnall as each Wednesday I post a World's Fair Wednesday with info about the fair. Thanks again!!(less)

The pandemic changed a lot of my plans for writing - as it changed so much for everyone around the world. I lost a bit of my momentum and focus and now I'm concentrating on the launch of We Came Here to Shine on June 16 and taking care of my family. It hasn't left much of the dedicated hours I personally need for writing (I've never been a write here and there type of author). But, I will get back to writing late summer/fall and hopefully will decide on my topic then. Thanks!(less)

Path to Pub for We Came Here to Shine #2: Custom Map

It was very important to me that images of the fair were included at the front of the book to orient the reader and to give a sense of place, which would help facilitate the reading of the book.

A MAP
I love when books have a map at the front, and I find myself referring to them on numerous occasions to better understand the world in which the characters exist.

So I decided that WE CAME HERE TO SHINE Read more of this blog post »

“How lucky she was to have a best friend like Jojo. A girl who relied on truth as much as humor, realizing that the former was essential and the latter was what made life bearable.”
Susie Orman Schnall, The Subway Girls

“Very few things in life unfold the way we thought they would. In fact, you should be suspect when they do. Who cares when the best things in life happen? Don’t you see? You’re getting everything you wanted. The packaging is a little unexpected and not ideal, but the stuff inside, the stuff that really counts, is just right.”
Susie Orman Schnall, The Subway Girls

“Let her tell him how she felt and how she just couldn’t do it anymore. How she couldn’t enable her father, how she couldn’t rescue her mother, how she couldn’t keep putting herself last in a trio of dysfunction. How she realized that the only way to heal was to extricate herself entirely from the one relationship that was supposed to be the most pure and protective. But it wasn’t.”
