Rik Stone’s working life began in shipyards before he moved on to become a merchant seaman and, for reasons he won’t share here, on more than one occasion found himself stranded in the middle of nowhere. Later on, he worked in quarries and met some wonderfully rich and diverse characters. But then life tamed, maybe a little too much, when he moved into the IT industry.

A surprise came like an episode from Tales from the Unexpected when he became interested in studying and worked through to gaining a BSc. degree in Mathematics and Computing. But it was his love of reading fiction gave him the ambition to write it and his broad experience of life and the confidence of education enabled him to do it.

However, there are occasions where I don’t write because, while the notions are there, my mind is too busy sorting out the order of things. If those ideas refuse to fall into line after a couple days I usually abandon the project and start outlining something else. Up to now, I’ve found that when I return to the main task everything has automatically fallen into place. I like to think of it as magic, but, unfortunately, it is merely my mind working in background mode. Hmm, maybe that is writer’s block and my imaginary friends have stopped talking to me for a while.(less)

As a writer it should be easy to describe, but the joy of holding the first paperback that has arrived for approval goes beyond words. Getting up in the morning and finding you have a new review that extols the virtues of your writing or the thrill of your words has me walking on air for the rest of the day. I was on a cruise last year where someone inquired if I was Rik Stone and then went on to ask for my autograph. It had never happened to me before, or since, but even sitting here now a warm glow burns within from thinking about it. There are a multitude of other things that have brought delight, but everything pales into insignificance when I compare it to the simple pleasure I get from actually writing.(less)
