Bernard Assaf is a fiction dabbler (in other words, he enjoys creative writing during his sparse leisure time) and occasional editor of role-playing game items and related fiction. His career and livelihood have been tied to the software development industry since his high school days, but his hobbies have been inexorably tied to the science fiction and fantasy genres for even longer.

Slowly, I put the book down and gulped nervously, eyes wide open, because I remembered: the rest of my family was out at the movies.(less)

19 Book series I want to finish

I took a look at my "already read" list today. Turns out I'm in the "middle" of more series than I realized. Perhaps I should try to finish some of them. I order them below by "longest amount of time since I read one in the series" to "shortest." Perhaps I'll re-engage some. Perhaps I won't. I'm not counting series where I read only 1 of and don't want to finish it.

The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold
“Cecil flashed a grin. "Quite. Plus your rather irritating habit of treating your superior officers as your, ah..." Cecil paused, apparently groping again for just the right word.

"Equals?" Miles hazarded.

"Cattle," Cecil corrected judiciously.”

First off: Dr. Newberg gets major bonus points for using quotes from Star Wars at the beginning of one of the chapters of this book!

This is definitely an academic read. There were several times where I struggled to keep up with the biological and neu

Bernard is on page 585 of 830 of The Past through Tomorrow: "If This Goes On--" (1940). Ok this one is going to stick with me. At least, as long as we are in our current political situation in the United States, with a fascist cult leader who uses religion, moral issues, propaganda, and lies, as divisive 'us vs. them' wedges for political gain, and who actually became president, twice. Heinlein basically predicted the current Trump era of American politics.

Sadly, had to return to library before finishing. I'll definitely be picking this back up one day.

[Update July 27, 2026: No, I probably won't, as my kids are no longer kids and wouldn't sit still for me to read them any book, much less a kids' book.
