I've been an avid organic gardener for more than 20 years, writing about my hobby for newspapers and magazines.

I'm also a blogger and online journalist, currently working as Managing Editor for New Media at SouthCoast Media Group in New Bedford, Mass.

Several years ago, I was approached by Hobby Farms Book Division and asked to author a book about small-scale organic farming. I took up the challenge, and quickly decided that if I wanted to write about farming, I had better become a farmer.

I turned my backyard garden into a commercial farm, selling fresh organically grown vegetables and fruit to neighbors, co-workers and friends who signed up for a community supported agriculture (CSA) program.

I'm in the news business, so when something breaks, we have to write about it and post it online immediately ... no waiting for the muse for inspiration.
I think that discipline has taught me to write my way through any kind of writer's block that I might have.
I often find that just the act of writing will eventually inspire me. So I sometimes just blurt out as much as I can, then go back and edit the copy for a more refined outcome.(less)

Why won’t my irises bloom?

Bearded iris should bloom in early June. If you’re only seeing sword-like foliage, there may be problems.



A gardener in my neighborhood group asked for advice on why her bearded iris bed wasn’t blooming. It had bloomed in the past, but now there were only foot-high leaves, with no flowering stalks.
