TALES FROM THE CRIB

Sifting through a box of old cards, letters, and papers always feels like an adventure to me. You never know what forgotten treasure you may find!

Last night I found a very old “book” my dad put together for me of my first ever “printed” story. When I say I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember, this book is proof, written when I was just a wee cephalopod. Check out the video below…

A View From THE BOX

Production on THE BOX is moving along swimmingly. Rob is sending art updates ever...

Frankenstein and More From THE BOX

IT’S ALIVE!

I’ve been excited about this film since it was announced Guillermo del Toro was adapting my favorite novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. I’ve been a fan of del Toro’s work since Cronos, and I knew he had the heart, vision, and sensibilities to get it right. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve been affected—so genuinely moved—by a film. Bravo, Guillermo, and everyone that worked on this masterpiece. There is no need for anyone to ever attempt adapting this treasured clas...

A Sinister Storyteller

We’ve shared with you that Rob Richardson has taken over art duties on THE BOX, but we haven’t shared any of his work on the project… until now. The plan is to post a WIP, panel, design, etc., with you every Magical Monday counting down till we launch the project February 1st on Kickstarter. A juicy morsel for our devoted readers.

Let Me Tell You a Story…

Storytellers are important. Before written language, rhapsodies, bards, skalds, maggids, minstrels and the like were treated like rockstars. R...

Welcome, Foolish Mortals! Halloween week is finally here. Before you know it, it’ll be gone and Jack Skellington will begin planning for next year.

Guests with children who book during the month of December will receive a copy of PIP’S MONSTER HOUSE in their room as a gift! This is super exciting and super-secret right now, so of course you are the first to know! How awesome is it that we...

I want to give a HUGE shout out of gratitude to our paid subscribers. Y’all are helping us more than you’ll ever know. It’s really popular to say you support indie creators, but you are actually doing it . You believe in us and are helping us make art. For that you have our eternal gratitude.

Mystery Authors and an Evil Entity, Oh, My!

On Thursday Oct 2nd, we were amongst several local authors for Little Bus Books’ No Covers fundraiser, “The Plot: Stories Speak Louder Than Covers.” We couldn’t talk about it beforehand because they wanted our identities to be kept secret. Each patron was given a chance to try to figure out who the author was that was reading from their book and what genre it represented before our identities were revealed. The result was a really fun event for a great cause, and we are so thankful Little Bus Bo...

Happy Book Birthday, Pip & Kraken!

Yesterday I received my copy of KRAKEN, the beautifully-illustrated graphic novel by my dear friend, David Hartman, and my old buddy, Shannon Eric Denton. Man, this book is a lot of fun! I’m really excited to see where it goes from here. (There’d better be more, fellas.) Monster Forge Productions is putting out some KILLER books!

And since I’m talking about indie comics, you can now purchase your copy of the first issue of PIP’S MONSTER HOUSE exclusively in our shop! JUST CLICK HERE.

And if that...

The Importance of Being Earnest

This past month has been a challenging one for us here at HPC—especially for me (Dwight). There are times when partnerships work, and there are times when they don’t. I say this because we had to dissolve a recent partnership that, in hindsight, never should have happened. For those who don’t know, the path of independent publishing is no yellow brick road—it’s often fraught with pitfalls, bandits, twists, turns, and, sometimes, the road ends on a cliff. Having walked this road for 20 years, it’...

Monsters Everywhere

I don’t know about you, but I need to step away from work and social media on a regular basis to recharge the ol’ creative batteries (and keep the little crumb of sanity I still have). Dave Youkovich and I have been working extremely hard on THE BOX, getting everything ready for our upcoming Kickstarter campaign—and let me tell you, that requires a crazy amount of time and work to do right. Thankfully, the incredibly talented Rob Richardson has joined the team, so we are right on track.

WIP from ...

What's in THE BOX?

As we draw closer to the Spooky Season™ we will be sharing much more about our upcoming horror project with artist Dave Youkovich, THE BOX. We asked Dave to say a few words about working specifically on THE BOX, and we received the following via raven messenger:

The only known photo of artist & troglodyte, Dave Youkovich

How could I say no to Dwight and his premise: A monstrous battle royale. Dracula, The Werewolf, and Frankenstein's monster (which I shall call Frankenstein from now on. Bear wit...
