Lisa A. Kramer is the author of P.O.W.ER, a feminist dystopian novel and Sarton Women's Literary Award finalist. Set in a world where women are forbidden to read, it follows Andra, who can write events into existence—and never wanted to be a revolutionary. The Huffington Post called it "part dystopian fiction, part feminist manifesto."

[She also writes and directs for the stage, and is building Mystic Haven, a magical-world creative project on Kickstarter.]

I would help care for magical creatures in Fablehaven. I would make astute observations about people at Pemberley, while having tea with Elizabeth Bennett. I would stay at Damselfly Inn in the imagined town of Thornton, VT (from a series of romances by Cameron Garriepy). And, of course, I'd be working writing along side the women and men of P.O.W. to change the world in New North (from my own book P.O.W.ER). If a book draws me into the world, any kind of book, I want to be there meeting the characters and sharing the adventures, tasting the food, experiencing worlds unknown. That is part of the appeal of reading (and writing) for me.(less)

Over the summer, I will often read several books that require a slower read, and several lighter ones. It just depends on my mood. (less)

The Gift of Time to Create

One of my creative passions is light. Yes, light. Many moons ago, I thought I might become a lighting designer for the theatre. While I ultimately focused on directing, my favorite time in the creation of a show is setting light levels during tech. Light, for me, is an important character in any play. It sets mood, adds magic, illuminates and hides important things. I think about light a lot at th

P.O.W.ER by Lisa A. Kramer
“You may be right, Emily, but I believe that a woman’s ability should be her own to use or not, as she will. I thought you believed that as well, but perhaps we have different goals and understanding of what defines freedom.”

“You showed me the possibilities that came from women having strength and power that men could not conceive. You made me see the potential of bringing people together to fight against the inequities and cruelty of Sandovar’s rule. It worked. Women have discovered their abilities and are coming forward to strengthen one another. Men have recognized Sandovar’s corruption and the need to join forces with women, rather than keep us under control.”
Lisa A. Kramer, P.O.W.ER

“The proof of the pudding is the eating.”
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

“To me the purpose of art is to produce something alive...but with a separate, and of course one hopes, with an everlasting life of its own.”
Henry Green

“Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success.”
Dale Carnegie

“Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop. Die knowing something. You are not here long.”
Walker Evans

“I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world, to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.”
J.G. Ballard
