THE KNIGHT AND THE SHIELDMAIDEN is a fantasy verse tail of two lovers united by passion and grit, but divided by class and war. They struggle to stay together with their whole world arrayed against them, and may have to face the fact that what they want the most may not be possible...

It had started at Lexington, and young Levi Dawson found himself swept up in the battle for freedom. Fighting alongside his neighbors, he’d helped drive the British all the way back to Boston. But wars are never won in a single day, and after the heady excitement of the first clash, Levi now finds himself stuck in a siege. With more big guns, and control of the sea, the British redcoats have no intention of leaving. With control of the land, and greater numbers, the militias of New England have no intention of letting them out of the city. Both sides are stuck in stalemate, and looking to break it. Levi finds himself caught up in these events, and soon begins to understand that wars aren’t gallant moments of bravery, but brutal slogs that can last for years, exhausting even the most ardent patriot. But with his betrothed in British hands, his father estranged from him, and his home town thinking him just above trash, what choice does he have but to keep fighting? There’s only one way forwards for this young man, and the nascent country, and that’s through pain, struggle, and determination…

But a single victory does not a war win, and a young America waits nervously for the return of the British army. Rumors of fleets and armies abound, everyone knows what is coming. Levi Dawson, a survivor of the Boston campaign, finds himself caught up in the preparations. He's been sent from home, to fortify and prepare New York for the British attack. He's seen the redcoats can be defeated, but finds himself in unfamiliar country, alongside untested militias who had no part in the previous fighting. Seeing as the continentals have no navy of their own, he knows they'll be on the defensive, against the world's strongest navy, and the largest army ever sent to the new world..
