Writing to Art
Writing to art is my favorite escape from writer's block. This fall (November 13, 6-8:00 p.m.) I'll be teaching my workshop, Art-Felt Words, at The Writers Place in Kansas City.
My most recent on-line poem was written to an odd, but beautiful photograph. "Odd" is the key word. It took me to an unusually dark, eerie place: the sort of place I'd rather know about through fiction than from the evening news.

Alarie's Ekphrastic Poetry
I've been a lifelong art lover. My family didn't care a thing about art, so I spent hours looking at the Paintings listing in the World Book Encyclopedia as a child. I wanted to be an artist until writing became my top passion, so I still turn to art for inspiration. You can imagine my delight in finding a new journal online devoted to the art and literature connection.
Ekphrastic accepted four of my poems. they published the first two today. The others will appear in February.
I hope you enjoy them.

Like Minded on Ekphrastic
This is one of my darkest ekphrastic (written to art) poems. The sculpture will show you why. I'm not often drawn to modern sculpture, but this grouping on the lawn of The Nelson-Atkins Museum here in Kansas City spoke to me.

"Two Women" by Alarie Tennille

Two Women, by Leonor Fini, 1939.
Two Women
Every “can’t believe SHE
is YOUR sister” spikes acid
through my veins.
Shouldn’t my little sister shadow
me, copy my moves? Not her.
She arrived an adult, no, a presence,
wrapped in a precious, doll-sized body.
As she grew, I faded.
I pretended she wasn’t there,
even while crouching at key holes,
trying to make sense of her –
the strut, the here I am! tsunami
when she enters a room.
Surely she can’t wear lit candles
in her hair, but I see them. Others
just see the glow.

Alarie Nominated for Best of the Net
I'm very excited to be nominated for the Best of the Net by The Ekphrastic Review. I love writing poems about art. Next to my father, Monet is my most frequent person named in poems. I fell in love with him when I was about 10.
