Blame April, she is the cruelest month after all. The first book was written as a personal challenge for national poetry month which is in April. I felt I was not writing often enough and so set the challenge to write everyday. When the month ended not only did I have thirty complete poems of a quality that surprised me I also discovered to my delight that there were thematic elements and an ebb and flow of ideas that emerged from each days circumstance and mood. Some days the poem took over and wrote itself. Other days they were dragged painfully from my head much like Zeus giving birth to Athena. This in turn compelled me to try again in a different month to see if the seasons also were a factor. From there I just counted. Four seasons, three months to each season, starting in April; July, October and January naturally emerge. July is almost done being written. I have five more days to compose. Then the goal is to complete the series next January.

Some days it takes longer than I would like to get going but that is where discipline and experience come in. Poems are everywhere you look. I pick an object or a feeling or a color whether I want to write about it or not then I write and fuss and work until it feels finished.(less)

July Fifteenth

So cool and fresh the air you bring to us
just when poor sufferers need it the most.
Hot sweltering days of one hundred plus
when both body and mind turn into toast.
In your chill, millions comfortably rest
as long as the grid can provide power.
Those in your presence believe they are blessed
bask in your glory for many an hour.
Some think this worship is ugly to view
like the Luddites who hate technology. Read more of this blog post »
