Characters & Setting: Newport’s Salt Air Meets English Resolve in “Unpretentious Lady Jane”

Dive into the cast and the coastal world that shape Jane and Henry’s summer of transformation—where grand estates, steel fleets, and family expectations collide.
Characters and setting are inseparable in a story like Unpretentious Lady Jane. Jane Armstrong’s escapades feel alive because they take place in a world that is both lavish and constricting: the Gilded Age which take us from England to Manhattan and ultimately, to the seaside of Newport. There, yachts line the harbor and social calendars leave little room for spontaneity, but Jane and Henry manage to find it in the lazy days of summer that her American cousins cherish.
The setting amplifies character traits—Jane’s rebellious streak is bold in England, but after arriving in American, that boldness begins to take a back seat against the contrast of manicured lawnsand uncontrollable ocean waves. Her whole world is changing and she has to find her footing all over again. She now has a choice. Free from the confines of a strict aunt in England, something about American independence and the possibility of meeting someone new offers her a glimpse of finding real happiness, perhaps with someone who seems untouched by societal expectations.
Henry’s sense of duty seems light after meeting Jane, even though he is carrying a heavy load beneath the shadow of his shipping empire and his father’s demands. Can these two balance each other? And yet, Henry knows he can’t possibly control Jane and her propensity for trouble. When danger stumbles into their midst, he’s not sure if he can keep her safe either.

Lady Jane Armstrong. Jane is witty, impulsive, and fiercely independent. Her mischief is a defense mechanism and a declaration—she believes it is impossible and highly unlikely that she can truly be good when she is constantly silenced and misunderstood by shame, circumstances often beyond her control, and stifled by etiquette. Beneath the bravado, readers find a woman wrestling with identity, longing for acceptance and family, and learning how to trust God and others. Jane’s voice carries the novel: playful, honest, and vulnerable.
Henry Warrington. Henry is the stoic counterpoint to Jane’s wildfire. As heir to a shipping dynasty, he is comfortable with strategy and order, yet drawn to what Jane represents: freedom, authenticity, and a love that isn’t transactional. His father’s ultimatum—secure a bride by summer’s end or lose the inheritance—creates stakes that are both romantic and practical. Henry’s efforts to protect Jane while respecting her independence and keeping his passion for her tempered to offer her a chance at a real courtship form one of the novel’s most compelling tensions. He wants to run when he knows they need to walk and test the strength of their newfound relationship.

Supporting Players and Conflict. The Winthrop cousins, Jane’s American relatives, including her maternal American aunt and uncle, provide warmth and understanding, a stark contrast to her strict English upbringing. They represent acceptance and the possibility of belonging. In opposition, Jane’s English aunt and former fiance, and navigating a new set of American high society friends—along with an obsessive, eccentric artist commissioned to capture Jane’s likeness—introduce conflict. These characters illustrate how control and unhealthy fixation can harm someone’s freedom and well-being. These antagonistic elements heighten the suspense while deepening the emotional payoff when justice and reconciliation arrive.
The Gilded Age Backdrop. Manhattan’s high society, Newport’s gilded mansions, seaside promenades, fashionable ballrooms, and the international reach of Henry’s shipping business and his family’s castle (offering Jane a small taste of England to counter her longing for the English countryside) do more than provide atmosphere; they shape choices. The era’s social rituals influence the characters’ decisions and reveal what’s at stake when reputation and inheritance hang in the balance. The juxtaposition of English formality and American pragmatism becomes a character in itself, pushing Jane to grow and offering Henry a new vision with a woman he may actually be able to trust at his side.

Underneath everything, Jane is learning that her refuge from the storms of life is found in her Creator. Maybe coming to America was the greater plan all along. Together, character and setting create a summer that feels inevitable—the sort of season where a person might be undone and remade by love, faith, and community. For readers who savor characters that leap off the page and settings that transport, Unpretentious Lady Jane delivers a richly drawn world and unforgettable people worth cheering for.

First Line Friday, Jake’s War, & How Great His Love Is for You and Me
A radiant couple strolls hand-in-hand through a lush, vibrant garden surrounded by diverse animals.Something occurred to me today as I was going about my day. It was something that I don’t ever remember fully contemplating before, but it was about creation. I was pondering how God created us and how much He loves us. What brought this on was a time of pain and reflection about something that had hurt me, kind of like Jake, the hero in my upcoming release.
Honestly though, Jake’s hurt stems from a terrible betrayal. His seems more significant than my hurt, except that Jake’s is fictional. My hurt stems from a real-life kind of hurt regarding something two people I barely know had said about me based on a small window of time observation or maybe hearsay. In the one case, I’ve only met the person briefly, once, for five minutes. The observation must be based on hearsay. In the other, I’ve seen the person a handful of times and have gone out of my way to be kind and polite in both situations with both people. Their comments probably should not bother me. I may never even see them again except briefly. They are distant relations. So distant, I hardly ever see them. They don’t even live in my state.
If it was a negative review, I’d just shrug it off. Reviews writers receive are from strangers for the most part. People we will probably never even meet. But this was deeper. This was about something said on two separate occasions about me, by two different people who barely even know me. Still, I felt crushed.
So, I did the only thing I know to do. I forgave them.
I took my hurt to the Lord and talked to Him about it. He sees everything anyhow, so He knows all about it. He knew about the whole situation before I did. He’s omnipotent. He is omni-present. He’s everywhere and sees all. He saw the ache in my heart and the sadness.
It’s not like I haven’t ever made the same mistake before in saying something about someone else that I should never have said. How many times have I repented of THAT?! Plenty! Plenty of times.
What can any of us do when things like this happen, whether we are the offending one spewing words or the offended one as a recipient of spiteful words? All we can really do is forgive and let it go. Holding onto the hurt is like drinking a cup of poison the offender sent us. Not only that, but the Word is clear that we cannot go to Heaven if we have unforgiveness in our hearts.
But I was still hurting even after I forgave them until I reminded myself how much the Lord loves me and cares for me. The Word says that He has engraved me on the palms of His hands. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me. Isaiah 49:16, KJV. And it says much more about how much He loves me. John 3:16 reminds us that He sent His only Son to die for my sins on a cross. And we have only to look around at the beautiful provision in our daily lives to behold His love: the soft grass under our feet, the blue sky above, the sun shining each morning, the birds chirping a melody in our ears, the feel of fur on our hands when we pet our beloved fur babies, the smile on the face of a child who loves us …
All of it reminds us of how much He loves us. And I haven’t even mentioned the roof over my head, the soft bed I get to sleep in each night with clean linens and fluffy pillows, or the clean water and delicious food He provides for us. Yes, my husband had to go to work each day to afford these things, but I could go on and on with the bounty of blessings He has given me. I’m sure most of us could, in fact.
And then, I was thinking about Jesus, who was thinking about you and me when He was carrying that cross before they crucified Him, nailed Him to it, and made Him the Lamb who takes away all the sin in the world. I thought about how my face and your face passed before Him in His mind as they drove those nails through His hands.
Then it occurred to me that when God formed the dust and clay into a human form and breathed life into Adam and Eve, that the same thing must have gone through His mind. He must have envisioned each and every single one of us as He was creating Adam and Eve. He knew that they would have children and grandchildren and that generations would be born long after the first man and woman had lived. Since His ways are higher than our ways, He would likely have been able to think of each of us in the moments of creation and was able to envision each of our faces. He was thinking of each moment of our lives and how much He loves each one of us. He was thinking of our eye color, our hair color, where He would place a freckle or a dimple or a birthmark upon each one of us. He was thinking about all that we would become in Christ Jesus and all that we would face leading up to the day of our salvation. He was thinking about who we would need in our lives: parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, teachers, friends, and so much more.
What a grand love! To think that He was thinking of you and me at creation and at the cross makes it so much more personal. This was an amazing realization, and kind of profound that He showed it to me in my hour of need. He’d already shown me that He was thinking of me at the cross, but now, He has shown me that He was thinking of me at creation too! He was not just thinking of Adam and Eve, which is kind of how I had always imagined creation. No, He was thinking of me way back at the beginning in Genesis. He was thinking of you then too.
Kind of like the first line in Jake’s War.

Hold onto Him. Don’t let go. He has a purpose and destiny for each one of us. You are important. You matter. You are deeply loved, even if sometimes someone misunderstands or misjudges you in a moment that has somehow gone wrong. Lots of things go wrong in our fleshly human ways, but God’s ways are pefect. When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. But Jesus took the form of a man and brought redemption.
God will heal our tears, heal the wounds of our own mistakes, and bind up our sorrows. He’ll make it all right. He’ll set the record straight. He will heal broken hearts. Our part is to do our best in the worst of places (as my grandfather said in his last sermon), even when we make a mistake and judge someone harshly, say the wrong thing, or hurt someone else somehow … or when we are misunderstood or misjudged.
When we struggle with forgiveness, it may help us to picture the other person who hurt us almost as if the other person is a representative bearing the face of our Father in Heaven, as if they were God Himself. If we love Him, we must love our fellow man. So let us picture each other as an extension of the Lord and it will make it easier to forgive. Because the Bible says if we cannot love other people, we cannot possibly love Him. 1 John 4:7-8: “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love”.
In the end, God will fix it. In the meantime, sometimes the only thing we can do and the best thing we can do, is forgive. Put it under the blood of the Lamb and keep going. Put a smile on your face. Don’t waste any time regretting things beyond our control. What other people say and do and think is not our problem. Often, what they say and do and think is a reflection of them and their problems. Think on happier things and do your best to stay in your lane. Go forward. Release the past and its hurts and whatever those things are that we can’t change, fix, or resolve. Forgive. Let it go. Move on.
Because you are loved. We are deeply loved. I am loved. He loves us beyond what we can even imagine. We are loved so much that He knows the number of hairs on our head. That is kind of crazy when you consider it. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
Oh, and I also hope you’ll grab a copy of Jake’s War. Forgiveness is one of Jake’s greatest weapons in this mountain man’s story. If you enjoy Christian Historical Western Romance filled with faith, humor, sweet romance, and a dash of suspense, I think you’ll enjoy this closed door novella.
Happy reading, friends! Leave a comment. I’d love to hear from you. I hope you enjoyed this devotional. I hope the next time you are hurting, that you too, will think of God’s amazing love for you and allow it to wrap around you like a healing balm.

My Review of The Unflappable Miss Fairchild
Absolutely loved this sweet, clean, Christian, Regency Romance book, “The Unflappable Miss Fairchild,” by Regina Scott. There were so many things I loved about it, but in particular, the hero and heroine, Anne and Chas (Charles). Their adventures kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what might happen next.
So well done, I was amazed and highly entertained by the amount of research and the grasp Regina has on this time period in history. There were many humorous points in the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I loved that Regina intertwines faith, history, a fast-paced plot, and likeable, relatable characters in her books. She’s one of my favorite writers and I will definitely read more of her books. I highly recommend this author and her work.
My Review of “Until Leaves Fall in Paris”
Author Sarah Sundin kept me thoroughly entertained, inspired, and on the edge of my seat as I read Until Leaves Fall in Paris, a wonderful choice if you love WW2 books with romantic suspense.
The main characters, Paul and Lucie, drew me in. These two begin to tug on your heartstrings the more you get to know them with each turn of the page. I loved that Lucie is a ballet dancer and manages a bookstore. Paul, an American, manages an automobile factory taken over by the Germans. Their lives intertwine and the stage for the story is set from there amidst the backdrop of occupied Paris.
Since I studied French for four years in high school and taught the language to my children in homeschool for another four years, and have visited Paris, I was delighted to find the author incorporated a few French words into the manuscript.
She also included research in her storyline that I didn’t know about before, despite the fact I’ve read numerous WW2 books and watched many hours of documentaries and movies about the era.
I appreciated the fact she created vivid scenery of Paris, and occupied Paris too. There were many well-written scenes with great realism about the experience of these two brave Americans who stayed much longer than they probably should have to help fight against the evil Nazi regime as the war grew more dangerous. It was interesting to have various glimpses of how their Parisian friends and neighbors responded as well.
The best part is how Sarah weaves faith into this wonderful story.
I highly recommend the book if you’re looking for a clean, sweet, Christian fiction read from this challenging time in world history. I will definitely read more by this author.

A Winter at the White Queen

A compelling and entertaining page-turner by Author Denise Weimer, A Winter at the White Queen grabs hold and pulls you right in from the start! I read the entire book in three or four sittings and loved every minute. It held my attention all the way through.
Our main characters, Ellie and Lewis, wrap themselves around your heart. The mystery behind Lewis makes this book an exceptionally intriguing read filled with both mystery and suspense. I found myself on the edge of my seat throughout. Just when I thought I knew the answers and had figured everything out, something would happen and place me in doubt of my conclusions. You’ll want to keep reading and turning the pages to find out how everything turns out.
I loved how the author thoroughly researched the time period and setting. I could imagine everything as if I had traveled there, and indeed I feel as though I have traveled here during this time because of this lovely story. Since I’ve visited this area, I could imagine it even more, but readers who haven’t visited the area will love it. I kept learning new things about the Gilded Age even though I have researched it many times. I immensely enjoyed the descriptions and the way the research entered the pages and the lighthearted tone combined with depth in the characters, the plot, and themes. Two of my favorite characters in the story are Ada and Cora, but I won’t tell you more about these wonderful additions to the novel.
As for themes, I love the fact this book deals with a theme which centers around our insecurities. We all have a few of those which makes it a story anyone can relate to and find inspiration in both the outcome and many other points along the journey of this read.
I highly recommend this opening book for Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts series. Each book can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone and in any order, but I’m sure readers will want to read them all. These books are sweet, clean, wholesome, and yet romantic. They also have a beautiful Christian message told in an interesting and inspirational way.
Don’t miss my contribution to the series and these others–:
Book 2, A Summer at Sagamore by Lisa M. Prysock (that’s moi!).
Book 3 is A Season at the Grand by Sherri Wilson Johnson.
And Book 4, A Summer at Thousand Island House by Susan G. Mathis.
Stay tuned for more books in this series … and check out our series page here.

Review of “One Cinderella Night” by Linore Rose Burkard
One Cinderella Night: Christian Romantic Suspense/Billionaire Romance
Here’s a copy of the review I submitted to Amazon to summarize my thoughts about this wonderful story.–:
Splendid!
A choosy reader, I found this contemporary romantic suspense fairytale retelling both riveting and magnificent! The characters and plot draw one inside to a compelling story readers won’t want to put down until enjoying every last drop. Intrigue, witty dialogue, a well-crafted plot, and faith combine for an enticing read that kept me turning the pages, wondering how it would all work out. Highly recommend! Five stars all the way!
I wasn’t sure if a fairytale retelling I’d read a number of times as a child and watched on Disney (nearly as often as I’d read the book) would hold my attention, but this novel pulled me right in from beginning to end. I felt like I knew Emma, the heroine, almost immediately, drawn into her plight. Peter, our hero, intrigued me from his first appearance in the book, all the way to the end.

I loved the modern-day twist on this story, the New York Cityscape feel, the descriptions in the book, and enjoyed the secondary characters as much as the main characters. I loved the suspense and intrigue, keeping me on the edge of my seat through the reading. The dialogue was witty and done well. The author does a fantastic job of weaving faith into the story in such a natural way that I was looking for it, waiting for it, and hoping for it, delighted with how it came into the story.
I won’t say too much more because I don’t want to spoil it for readers, but there wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy about the book. It is a well-researched and compelling read that leaves you cheering for the heroine and the hero, but also the secondary characters. Readers will be able to tell Burkard did her homework. It’s not too long or too short. One can easily read it in a few sittings, or if you’re a slower reader who wants to savor each word like me, about five or six evenings. The characters stick with you long after you’ve paused from reading it, and again when finishing the book. It is an entertaining story and a worthwhile read.
Here’s where readers can get their copy–: https://www.amazon.com/One-Cinderella-Night-Christian-Billionaire-ebook/dp/B0BFX58N7P/
Happy reading, friends! Do you like fairytale retellings? Give this one a try! I’m certain you won’t be disappointed in the suspense. You’ll soon find yourself wondering how this will ever work out into a happy-ever-after ending, but I promise it does find its way there, and on such a satisfying journey while feeding the soul.

Ten Historical Fun Facts About “A Summer at Sagamore”
Writing A Summer at Sagamore was so fun! Opening in 1883, the Sagamore is considered one of America’s Historical Hotels and Resorts. This Gilded Age Christian Historical Romance with mystery and intrigue just flowed for me. Jackson Gable (Jack) and Miss Abigail Greenwood (Abby) are the main characters, supported by characters from the Sagamore Resort where the story takes place, and members of Abby’s family.

1. I had a little help and inspiration for the character of Abby’s grandmother, Mrs. Fanny Goldman Wiltshire. My inspiration turned out to be a character many of us know and love from Downton Abbey, the Dowager and matriarch of the Earl of Grantham’s family played by Dame Maggie Smith.
2. The real Sagamore Resort is located on Green Island on Lake George in upstate New York. The resort sits up high on a hill looking down over the pristine waters of Lake George, located in the glorious Adirondacks.

3. During the Gilded Age, the wealthy flocked to the Sagamore to enjoy the resort. Over the years, the resort offered secluded luxurious accommodations for boating, golfing, fine dining, and horseback riding.
4. Many of its residents arrived by steamboat aboard The Sagamore steamship.
5. Many high-profile visitors have stayed at the resort, including during 1954, when the hotel was headquarters for the National Governor’s Conference, presided over by Vice President Richard M. Nixon, and by New York State Governor Thomas E. Dewey.

6. The original Sagamore opening its doors in 1883, stood as a brilliant and spectacular example of Queen Anne-style architecture and received universal acclaim. Aiding their widespread acclaim, Lake George became nationally known in a picture inside James Fenimore’ Cooper’s book, The Last of the Mohicans.

7. Myron O. Brown, a proprietor of the Mohican House in the area, came up with the idea to build a luxury resort to accommodate the many wealthy families he saw vacationing on a regular basis in the area. With the help and support of four Philadelphia millionaires and another joining them later on, the board of investors purchased Green Island for a sum of $30,000 and set out to build the resort by hiring an architectural firm named Wilson Brothers. Construction lasted a year and was considered a stunning and genius design and building feat. The first four investors owned mansions located on Millionaire’s Row, a long line of homes on one side of Lake George, vacationing in them frequently.
8. Myron retired in 1905 after filling the role of General Manager for many years. Under his management, the daily rate cost around $4.00 per room and remained constantly booked. His first summer as manager was considered a huge success.
9. A structural accident in 1894 and another incident in 1914 caused the Sagamore to rebuild various parts of the resort twice, the first completed in five weeks. The second incident caused the resort to sit dormant for nearly a decade before Ernest Van Rensselaer Stires arrived with help and inspired plans to be drawn up for a complete rebuild of Colonial Revival-style architecture. Construction stalled again during the Great Depression until another wealthy investor helped them.
10. Over the years, the resort owners have changed hands and it has been updated and upgraded, continuing to thrive to this day. In 1929, a new Sagamore Golf Course designed by the famous golf architect and engineer Donald J. Ross was completed at a cost of a half million dollars. The Sagamore Horse Shows and Gold Cup Speedboat Races were held during the 1930s and 1940s. All sorts of amenities are available at the resort in this modern era and many weddings take place at this venue.
