At 67-years-old, Brenda Marie Smith is finally having the writing career she's longed for all her life. Her second novel (and the first to be published by someone besides herself), IF DARKNESS TAKES US, won the 2018 Southern Fried Karma Novel Contest and was published by SFK Press in October 2019. The book is post-apocalyptic science fiction, unique in that it features an aging grandmother, Bea Crenshaw, and it takes place in a slightly altered version of the author's own neighborhood.

Now Brenda's sequel, IF THE LIGHT ESCAPES, will be published in August 2021, again by SFK Press. The story's told in the voice of Bea's 18-year-old grandson, Keno Simms, a stalwart young man who must lead his broken family and neighbors to survive life without

Depends on what kind of writer's block I'm having. If it's simply a matter of not feeling in the flow of writing, I just write anyway, knowing that I can always come back later and punch it up, and that getting the story down in any kind of way at least gives me a starting point to work from. Writing is rewriting, so any writing, however poor, is not time wasted.

Now, if I'm having trouble deciding what should happen next in the story, I may take a day or two to think it through. Sometimes I make little hand-written charts or outlines. Sometimes I do some research. Often I seek the advice of other writer friends of mine. A writing group is invaluable -- people you can trust to be straight with you and help you polish and improve your work. And often in these cases, I just pick a direction and write it. I might write more than one scenario, then I compare and contrast until I figure it out to my satisfaction.(less)

“He said he’d heard the sound of one hand clapping. He said, once his mind took in the wondrous no-sound of holy oneness, the empty echo of eternal bliss, he was never the same. He could hear it still, he said, resounding in the ether and tickling the back of his brain.

Something not normal was going on with his brain. No argument there.”
Brenda Marie Smith, Something Radiates

“No matter how desperately a mother loves you, she can only put up with so much. And so, the day came when Mother Nature lashed out against us.

I understood where Nature was coming from. My family never listened to me either, which is why I didn't tell them about the guns I bought.”
Brenda Marie Smith, If Darkness Takes Us

“When longing overtook them, they drew together and made the most intense and tender love Sarah had ever known. She was a freshly exposed nerve in the bleeding heart of Christ. He was devout in his reverent passion as her healer. Their love was a hallelujah chorus, a quiet prayer of exaltation, a holy union in the moonlight before dawn. It was here in this crystalline space that Sarah and Johnny took each other the true way to God, or they found God in each other, whichever it was.”
