When You Want to Shine On Brightly

I was at the DMV when I realized times had changed. I could not make out the teeny tiny letters on the bottom line of the eye exam chart. I’d always had perfect vision, so I grumbled quite a bit when my husband drove me to the optometrist office a few weeks later. I wanted to be that girl who with sparkly eyes who would shine on brightly, but apparently I was going blind instead.

The young eye doctor dilated my pupils and crouched down to take a deep look into the back of my eye. “Are you experiencing any headaches?” she asked.

She seemed surprised when I said no. Then, she left the room, and another doctor with gray hair and more years of experience marched in with a concerned look on his face. He picked up a lens, shined a bright light right at my baby blues, and spent what seemed like an eternity making an assessment.

“Are you experiencing any headaches?” he asked. Apparently, my super-sized optic nerve was waving a big red flag of alarm. I ended up visiting two other doctor’s offices that same day – including a neurologist.

The neurologist ordered a spinal tap. One week later, I donned a hospital robe and waited in a cold, sterile room for a doctor to insert a needle into my vertebrae.

I don’t like needles of any kind. To help calm my nerves and quiet my racing thoughts, I brought along a dozen or so yellowing 3 x 5 cards with Scriptures on them. I quietly rehearsed the verses over and over again as I waited:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (II Timothy 1:7, NKJV).“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).“Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You” (Jeremiah 32:17).“The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).

As I flipped through the cards, the doctor walked in to begin the procedure. “Are you studying for a test?”

“Yes, I guess I am sort of studying for a test.” I smiled in reply. I explained to the doctor the sacred words scrawled in my sloppy handwriting on these cards reminded me that my God was in control of today’s procedure.

That day, I unexpectedly let my little light shine in a doctor’s office. This season of life has provided many more obstacles that have transformed into opportunities to shine on brightly for my Savior.

Rather than become a recluse filled with regret, choose to use each moment of your today to radiate. Redeem every moment. Matthew 5 reminds us: “You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven” (vs. 14-16, MSG).

Open up the doors and let the light shine on, sisters.

Sometimes the darkness in this sin-saturated world seems all-encompassing, and we feel powerless to overcome the sorrow and despair. But, because our God is greater than all the gloom, we can count on this promise: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5, NLT)

The Light of the world has come, and we always have hope — even when we feel lost and are struggling to see our next step. Jesus has overcome the darkness of sin and death, and His Spirit now dwells in us.

God’s light always accompanies and shows us the way to go. When the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, the glory of the Lord went before them and followed after them on their journey. He blazed the pathway with His presence, protected them, and never left them alone.

Friend, this unchanging God is your God. He will illuminate your path “step by step” as you move forward in faith. The Almighty wants to reveal His glory to you and help you see more clearly just how awesome He is.

As you and I look to Him, the light of His love will transform us from within. Then, with His fire burning in our hearts, we have the privilege of radiating His love to brighten up this world.

Are you ready to arise and shine?

Spend 30 days challenging yourself to SEE, SEEK, and SHINE:

SEE:

Ask yourself: What else does God have to say about this Truth?

We’ll look at relevant passages that tie into each day’s theme and dig a little deeper into the principle God wants to impress on our hearts.

SEEK:

Ask yourself: How should this Truth impact my daily life?

We’ll consider a practical step we can take to live out the Biblical principle we’ve learned.

SHINE:

Ask yourself: Who do I know that needs to hear this message?

We’ll challenge ourselves to carry the light of God’s Truth to someone who needs to receive Him.

This Bible study course will  help you discover practical ways to live out your faith and share the Good News with your friends, family, and neighbors. You’ll get a study journal with a daily devotional and journaling page plus a weekly video teaching.

When You Fight for Breakthrough in the Battlefield of Prayer

Somedays you end up in a battlefield fighting on your knees. This was one of those days.

My phone started to ding and I picked it up to read a very discouraging message. Someone I loved was in distress. Just a few days earlier, my friend had been released from the hospital after battling COVID. I thought he was past the hard part and home, but he took a turn for the worst and was rushed back to the Emergency Room. His life now hung in the balance.

In the days that followed, I fervently prayed for God to turn things around and heal this husband and father of three. Doctors can provide a diagnosis and do what is humanly possible to heal, but only a supernatural God can breathe life back into our lungs.

How we position our hearts when we are in pain speaks to the watching world. I learned a great deal from the faith-filled response of this man’s tight-knit family. During a prayer meeting on Zoom, his mom professed she believed in the power of prayer. The more she prayed, the more she felt God’s peace. She looked to God alone to raise her son from his sickbed so that he could proclaim God’s glory. One day later, her Instagram post read: “Thank You for holding me up, Lord. You are my strength.”

I raised a hallelujah when just 48 hours later my phone dinged with awesome news. A man who spent 18 days intubated was now breathing on his own, eating lunch, and asking to speak to his wife. The ICU doctor called it a miracle.

There is no one like our God.

Theologian Oswald Chambers shared wise advice about prayer: “We tend to use prayer as a last resort, but God wants it to be our first line of defense. We pray when there’s nothing else we can do, but God wants us to pray before we do anything at all.

When we start each day by lifting our eyes to our great God, the enemy of our souls cannot grab hold of our hearts and keep us in bondage to fear and doubt. Acknowledging we need God for this day aligns our will with the sovereign purpose of the Almighty.

We don’t look to the news to give us the big picture of our world. We cry out to our omniscient Lord for wisdom.

We don’t depend on the stock market for security. We know Jehovah Jireh alone is our Provider.

We will not yield our hearts to the ways of this world. We exalt the King of Kings above all else. Nothing on earth can compare to the glory of our God.

With surrendered hearts, we can choose to lay our discouraging emotions, our disappointments, and our unfulfilled dreams on the altar of prayer. When we say, “God, You are greater than even this,” our worry washes away and worship strengthens our resolve to move forward in faith.

Instead of becoming overwhelmed by what we cannot change or control, we can communicate our need for God’s help and trust He will fight for us. Our circumstances may change, but our God never fails. Our faithful God reigns over all, and His plans for us cannot be thwarted by the schemes of man.

Friend, our lives never hang in the balance. We are always held in God’s all-powerful hands.

Need more help to keep fighting in prayer? To arm you for battle, I’ve created a one-page printable with Scriptures you can use to start praying for your loved ones who need Jesus. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

Our lives never hang in the balance. We are always held in God’s all-powerful hands.

Every morning, I wake up and lift my heart to God in prayer.

I praise Him for His glory and goodness.

I surrender my agenda and expectations to His greater kingdom purposes.

I yield my desires to do His will.

And, then I ask for Him to move a mountain.

I cry out to Him for that mountain to crumble. I’m kneeling in surrender in a battlefield of prayer.

I believe that God is bigger than any obstacle or stronghold.

Yet, my mountain remains — immovable and unyielding.

Do you have a mountain? I bet you do.

Like me, you may be discouraged by the darkness that looms large in your view.

You aren’t alone.

Friend, your prayers are a sweet aroma of sacrifice that rises straight to the heart of the King of Kings.

One glorious day, He will thunder down and crumble your mountain.

Let’s spend 30 days on our knees together in the battlefield of prayer. Join me for a topical study that will arm you with Scriptural Truth and help you formulate a prayer strategy to fight for your breakthrough. Our study will begin on Monday, June 24th.

When You Need God’s Grace to Empower You to Stay in the Fight

“Lord, I need grace I don’t have.” I sat on the couch in his office and silently prayed for God to help me to respond kindly. Across from me sat my boss who was a Christian man, and I worked at a Christian school.  Over the course of several weeks, he had questioned my capabilities, misrepresented my motives, stripped me of responsibilities I loved, and placed me on probation.

I’d started working at the school way before he did. In fact, I’d grown up there. I met Christ as a middle school student in a chapel service, and it was my joy to give back and serve as a teacher to young people in the same classrooms I’d sat in for six years.

Except now, this new boss was a thorn in my flesh. For some crazy reason, he just didn’t like me, and I might lose my job because of it. But it was more than just a job – it was my ministry, my heart, my calling. I’d spent over a decade working there and loving every moment.

I didn’t know what to do, so I went back to my classroom and closed the door. I sat in a student desk and placed my open Bible in front of me and asked God to help me. I needed His direction. I didn’t know where to turn, so I turned to my Master first.

It was the 22nd day of the month, so I read through Proverbs 22 and prayed over each verse. When I got to verse 11, I heard the clear voice of the Holy Spirit give me my marching orders:

“He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.”

Really, Lord? I understood exactly what God was asking me to do, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to be gracious and loving to a man who wanted to destroy my life. I spent a few minutes crying out for God’s strength, praying for God’s blessing over my boss, and asking God to help me to serve with joy in the midst of a very uncomfortable situation.

3 truths from Proverbs to help You Respond with grace even when it’s hard: fill your words with grace.

The kindhearted tone and intent of your words can help to diffuse a very difficult situation.

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. ” (Proverbs 15:1)when in doubt, stay quiet and don’t blurt out your true feelings.

Instead of letting your emotions lead, lean into the Spirit and silently intercede for wisdom and grace..

“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” (Proverbs 29:11)Pray for opportunities to bless people who may not be so easy to love.

The best way to soften a hard heart is to keep watering that ground and being generous with your actions.

“Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” (Proverbs 11:25)

Need more help to keep fighting with wisdom and grace? I’ve put together a 30-day challenge to walk you through Proverbs, God’s book of wisdom. Visit the shop and purchase your copy of the devotional study journal.

You can also sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy of the first 5-days of this study for free in our Faith Fuel Library.

Rather than shrink back and grow disillusioned, we are called to step forward and get diligent. We win the war by washing the feet of the very one who is opposing us.

Whenever I am tempted to start complaining about how someone is treating me, I remember that Jesus picked up a towel and basin and kneeled before Judas to serve. He set the example for all of us to follow. We are called to represent Christ by redoubling our efforts to serve even when we aren’t rewarded.

I don’t know where you are standing today, friend. Perhaps you have a difficult boss or a negative neighbor. Maybe you are accused of something you did not do, or you are giving your all in a place where no one recognizes your hard work.  I want you to know that God sees you striving to obey His voice, and He is pleased by your sacrifice.

And by the way, I kept that job, and when that boss resigned to move to a new school, he shook my hand and told me how his opinion of me had changed. He recognized my faithful efforts, and I found favor in his eyes.

Here’s the sweet lesson I learned during that very difficult season:

when we ask God for help, He will give us the grace to stay in the fight and faithfully serve — even when it’s hard.

How to Shine Brightly During Your Darkest Season

Now I live in sunny South Florida, and I have never experienced a military invasion where I’ve been overwhelmed, confined, and imprisoned, but I have hunkered down at my house and been felt walled in more than once with water on all sides because of a hurricane. My husband and I have both had a major hospitalization where we’ve been confined for an extended period in the hospital battling for our health, and just as I sat down to type out these words on my laptop I got an unexpected phone call that led my husband and I to link arms and pray for protection from the enemy’s attacks. We can be standing in our own kitchen at home and feel besieged by dark circumstances out of our control.

As I looked at the life of Daniel in the Old Testament, I was challenged by how untroubled his inner life was despite all the turmoil surrounding him. I want to have that resolute spirit.

When we walk in wisdom, we shine brightly for Jesus even if the circumstances of our life are dark. Maybe you want that to be a reality in your life, but the truth is that sometimes you get so overwhelmed by all the adversity that you just want to hide away from the world. How can we persevere and start to dispel the darkness? Let’s take a look at the life of Daniel and learn 4 ways we can let our little light shine even in our darkest season.

How to Stand Firm and Avoid a Pitfall

Y’all I am going to confess that sometimes I get so consumed about getting my way that I not only fail to see the pitfall, sometimes I fall into a pit that I actually created in the first place. I collapse into the pit of my fear and disappointment. I give way to doubt and bitterness. I trip right into a black hole of stubborn pride and resistance of own making. I mean I should have seen it coming. I may not be able to control my circumstances, but I can certainly determine how I will respond. And sometimes I just keep moving forward without taking the measured steps I need to take to ensure that I am standing on the firm foundation of God’s Word and not being led blindly forward by my flesh where I end up falling flat on my face into a pit of defeat.

So this is our last week in Proverbs, and I discovered 3 principles from God’s book of wisdom in Chapter 28 that are helping me figure out how to stand firm and avoid a potential downfall. If you are prone to pitfalls like me, I hope you’ll find these helpful.

3 Prayers to Help You Prevail Over an Unjust Attack

Sometimes we try to serve and do what is right, and we end up battling an unjust attack. Our motives are questioned, and our good intentions are misinterpreted.

The very person who should be our cheerleader and come along side us with support ends up being a critic who hurls a ton of condemnation at us. We feel unjustly attacked, and we have no idea how to respond.  Do you have someone in your life whose turned into an adversary, and now you no longer enjoy showing up to serve where you know God has called you?

Years ago, I had a boss who made my life a nightmare.  I loved my job, but I was so exhausted from all the ongoing heartache.  In my desperation to figure out if I needed to quit my job or just stick it out, I turned to Proverbs to gain some perspective and much needed wisdom. I discovered that God had quite a lot to say about how we respond to unjust leaders in our lives and to people who may be abusing their power and authority over us.  Exactly what does God have to say about how we should persevere when we face persecution?  Let’s look into God’s book of wisdom together today and give ourselves a reality check. We’ll gain 3 things we can pray about to help us prevail even when someone is maligning us and trying to make our lives miserable.

How to Stop Stressing Out About Your Disrupted Plans

When my plans get disrupted, I tend to measure the stress level in my life by the amount of tension in my shoulders and back. Does your back tighten up into a knot and turn into a wall of concrete like mine does? When I am dealing with a lot of heavy things emotionally, my insides feel it. I can tell myself I am not that stressed, but my whole body is straining with anxiety and calling me a liar. Can you relate?

We like to plan ahead and be prepared, but the problem is that things rarely ever work out the way we picture them because we live in a fallen world broken by sin, and the enemy of our soul loves to disrupt our very well-laid plans and make us feel defeated. Let’s dig into Proverbs to discover what God’s Word has to say to help us stop being so anxious about the possibility of dealing with disrupted plans.

Four Blessings of Living with Uncompromising Faith

Have you made a decision to honor the Lord with uncompromising faith and uphold your convictions that was met with disapproval and rejection? Sometimes we choose to follow God and it costs us. We may lose friendships or have to stand alone on principle.  For a season, we may end up losing more than we gain. And it’s incredibly painful. The world will tell you it’s not worth it, but that’s not reality. Let’s take a look at Proverbs chapter 10 and encourage our weary hearts by reminding ourselves of 4 specific ways God shows special consideration to us when we choose to go “all in” in our pursuit of Him.

A woman with an uncompromising faith fears the Lord above all else. She wholeheartedly honors her Almighty God and humbly worships Him. She holds on to hope with resilience and remains. expectant while she waits for God to bring her redemption. No matter what happens, she perseveres in staying on course and following what God says is right even if everyone else is headed in a different direction. Instead of demanding her own way, she continually surrenders her will and seeks to conform to what God’s Word says. Friend, your uncompromising faith does not go unnoticed by your God.

How to Live a Successful Life This Year in God’s Eyes

We want to live a successful life, but we are facing so many obstacles. Sometimes we have way too many questions and not any answers.

Maybe like me you are feeling a little bit unsettled and confused about what God is up to in your life as you look back at the last year. You might have experienced some hard things, and you have no idea why God allowed such heartbreak to happen. As we look ahead to the year to come, how will can we stop looking back with disappointment and figure out how to walk into this next season with wisdom?

Proverbs 1:3 (NLT) explains that the purpose of God’s book of wisdom is to teach us to live disciplined and successful lives and to help us do what is right, just, and fair. Eugene Peterson’s The Message tells us that these Proverbs were “written down so we will “understand what life means and where it’s going.” Proverbs is “a manual for living…to “teach us the ropes” and give us a “grasp on reality.”

Now I don’t know about you, but I need a reality check. I desperately want God to help recalibrate my unsteady heart and to show me how to walk into this next season with more discernment. What does success look like for you and I from God’s perspective? We need the Lord to teach us how to live. So, let’s look at what Proverbs has to say about just that to learn how to move forward in the right way.

Join me on today’s podcast. Let’s dig into Proverbs to recalibrate our unsteady hearts and get a little reality check on exactly what success looks like in God’s eyes.
