Water and the Economy
Always thinking about water, about rivers….here’s something that might interest you from the Montreal Gazette:
“I see these very imminent problems and here we have our so-called leadership candidates running about harping on each other’s scandals and who can do better with the economy,” said David Schindler, a retired University of Alberta ecologist. “We are going to forget all about the economy when we run out of water.
Schindler added that water needs to be connected to the economy.
“I haven’t yet heard one mention about the billions of dollars that are going to be paid out to farmers for the agricultural disaster happening in Alberta and parts of B.C. this summer,” he said. “That happens every few years, and yet it’s scarcely mentioned as part of the economy.”
Also includes a mention about the re-negotiation of the Columbia River Treaty, which I talk about a bit in my book.
Check this article out, and before you vote, think a moment about our water and its relation to our health and our economy.

Two More Weeks!
Well, I’m getting excited – two more weeks until I’m on stage at the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts. Sunday, August 16, 2;30 p.m.
(Okay, by this time in two weeks I’ll be sitting on my hotel balcony having a glass of wine, grateful for the experience of being on stage, and relieved it’s all over with.)
This summer I’ve been working on my next novel, with the goal of finishing the rough draft by September. With the shelf like of books these days, I imagine there won’t be another festival appearance until the next book is out. If this the last hurrah for When is a Man, I couldn’t have picked a sweeter one – the Sunshine Coast is a wonderful place to be.
Hope you can stop by and check Doretta Lau, Mark Forsythe (of CBC’s BC Almanac) and I. And then stick around and catch Caroline Adderson, one of Canada’s best.
Bonus: the brilliant Kevin Chong will be on stage right before us at 1 pm.
See you soon.

Kobo Emerging Writer Prize
Hi everyone, I hope you’re well.
I have a big favour to ask.
If you’ve shopped on Amazon before and can sign in, I’m wondering if you would be willing to write a review for When Is a Man?
My publisher has submitted it for the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, and reader engagement is a big part of their selection process. Positive reviews on Amazon or Goodreads could really help my chances at winning.
If you can do this, it is best to do it on Amazon.com rather than Amazon.ca—that way it will end up on both sites. And since they’re deliberating on the prize shortlist right now, the sooner you can post a review, the better.
No pressure, but if you’re game, I would really appreciate your help!
Thanks!
Aaron.

Canadian Authors for Indies Day at Coho Books
Hi Everyone,
On May 2, I’ll be joining authors across Canada in supporting our local, independent bookstores by participating in a really great event: Author for Indies Day.
All over Canada, writers will be volunteering at independent bookstores, to recognize the importance of bookstores to writers and readers, to our communities and our culture.
I’ll be in Campbell River at Coho Books from 11-2 pm, recommending some of my favourite books to customers and doing what I enjoy most – talking about writing (which really is better than actually writing, most days). Celebrated local author Shari Green will take over from 2-5 pm.
If you’re in Campbell River, please stop by for a chat and a browse. If you’re elsewhere, ask your local bookstore if they’re participating in Author for Indies Day (some hints: my friend Angie Abdou will be volunteering at Lotus Books in Cranbrook; Caroline Adderson and Shaena Lambert will be at Hager Books in Vancouver; my fellow B&G author, Julie Paul, will be at Backbeat Books and Music in Perth, Ontario)
See you soon,
Aaron.

Under the Cover on All Lit Up
From the All Lit Up blog:
“In the last few years you can’t even talk about November without someone mentioning Movember. And with good reason–prostate and testicular cancer affects thousands of men, as well as their families, every year. Author Aaron Shepard shines a spotlight on the effects of prostate cancer in his new novel from Brindle & Glass, When is a Man. In honour of Movember Aaron was kind enough to share a bit about what he learned in the process.”

When is a Man makes its book festival debut!
Ah, autumn – along with all things apple (of which I’ve been partaking whenever possible), ‘tis the season for author tours, literary prizes and festivals. This year, I get to join in – not just in my usual role as starry-eyed audience member, but an author onstage at the Victoria Writers Festival.
On Saturday, November 8, I’ll be part of the Grit Lit: Writing the Rural reading and panel discussion. Joining me will be two immensely talented B.C. writers: the 2008 ReLit award winner Gillian Wigmore, whose novella, Grayling, was published this spring, while her latest collection of poems, Orient, just hit the shelves, and; , whose Prologue for the Age of Consequence has just been nominated for the Governor Generals Literary Award (Poetry).
Our host will be Jack Knox, Victoria’s journalist extraordinaire.
The panel kicks off at 11:45 – hope you can make it. While you’re at it, check out the other great events, including readings by Shani Mootoo, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, Lee Henderson, Don McKay, Audrey Thomas, Aislinn Hunter, Doretta Lau, Bill Gaston, Julie Paul, David Brock, Jane Silcott and many more….it’s a fabulous line up.
See you there.
