My new historical novel Finding Flora, about women homesteaders on the prairies, was published by Simon & Schuster in April 2025 and became an immediate national bestseller.
My debut novel Bird's Eye View tells the story of a young Canadian woman who joins the air force in World War Two and becomes an aerial photographic interpreter.
My second novel Wildwood is about a single mother from the big city who must fulfill the conditions of her inheritance by living for one year in an abandoned farmhouse in northern Canada.
I grew up on a prairie farm and had a long career in journalism, writing for newspapers and magazines including Reader’s Digest. I even published my own newspaper before turning to fiction.

The old Pilcher magic still works. I was captivated by this story of a young widow who finds her true place in the world (naturally it is in Cornwall, Pilcher's own spiritual home). The only issue I have with this and other novels in which the heroin ...more

“I am, to my core, Canadian, so, by osmosis, everything I write reflects that upbringing.”
Elinor Florence, Bird's Eye View

“No matter how good it is, your book will not sell itself.”
Elinor Florence

“I set one cup of milk into a pan of water and heated it to boiling. Bridget stirred the dry ingredients together five times, as the recipe directed: one cup flour, one cup sugar, three teaspoons baking powder and a pinch of salt. She sifted so merrily that a cloud of white flour circled her curly dark head like a halo. Into the dry ingredients I poured the hot milk, then folded in two stiff egg whites before pouring the batter into a pan and popping it into a moderate oven. When it had risen satisfactorily and a broom straw inserted into the centre came out clean,”
Elinor Florence, Wildwood

“Fear is the original sin. Almost all of the evil in the world has its origin in the fact that some one is afraid of something. It is a cold slimy serpent coiling about you. It is horrible to live with fear; and it is of all things degrading.”
Lucy Maud Montgomery, The Blue Castle

“Her only gift was knowing people almost by instinct, she thought, walking on. If you put her in a room with someone, up went her back like a cat's; or she purred.”
Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway

“The fashion has been in literary fiction for the depressing ending, and for more or less passive characters who have terrible things happen to them . . . So why not have a happy ending? Is there a law?”
