I mean, I do get excited as things unfold, especially if I'm having a good day and really love what I've written, or when a revision has things falling nicely into place. I love that feeling when things start coming together--when you're working on a draft and you cross a kind of turning point where suddenly it starts to come together as a book! I've heard some authors report feeling very attached to characters or stories and getting very emotional when they have to, say, kill someone off, but that hasn't been my experience. I can totally see how that could happen for someone, though.(less)

On one book, I got an education in interior design and decorating aesthetics. On another, I learned a ton about things like goal setting and self-discipline. In addition to ghostwriting, I did book-doctoring work for publishers, mainly in the health and wellness categories, so while I'm certainly no person-doctor I do know more than the average person about topics like mental health, getting a good night's sleep, eating to avoid/improve illnesses, etc. It's awesome to be able to learn from experts as I worked with them to share their knowledge with readers everywhere.(less)

Allyson and 4 other people liked Katie's review of I'm Glad My Mom Died:
I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
"Memoir about a child actor with a sexually and emotionally abusive mother. Jennette does not want to act, but does so because her mom pushes her and she wants to please her mom. She does this for years and years, putting her mom on a pedestal, but th" Read more of this review »
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar
"No, this isn't Doctor Who! But it is what you might call the literary equivalent.

The intersection of sci-fi and mytho-poetic is probably my favorite genre. It's a difficult formula to get quite right. The co-authors of this novella found a way to mak" Read more of this review »

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”
