I'm a Nichiren Shu priest serving at Myosho-ji, Wonderful Voice Buddhist Temple, located in Charlotte, NC. I also am a staff chaplain at Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy Hospital. I am now retired though there isn't much difference in life other than I have a bit more time to devote to activities that are important to me.

Writing is of course one of those things. Being active in the new Civil Rights movement and Black Lives Matter are two important issues to me in my life currently. I am also interested in the building of community centered around the various religious traditions. Of particular interest is how the various religions might better contribute to community without being divisive.

I will share, as I have heard other writes also s

I've been surprised in what develops through the process of writing. It is also a way for me to process thoughts that bounce around in my head. Giving those ideas a way to exit keeps them from jangling and making so much noise I can't hear myself think. It's fun too, and perhaps that's the best part of all.(less)

Shokai Kanai. He suggested that I write it because of my work as a hospital chaplain and my work in providing spiritual support.

It was not an easy book to write, which surprised me. Perhaps this was because I had originally planned to write about the parable of the Burning House.

The Physician's Good Medicine is an exploration of the short parable of the Physician and his Ill Children found in Chapter XVI of the Lotus Sutra. I used the idea of Oratio Divina and personal story as the framework for the exploration.

I've been introducing spiritual practices from other faiths as a way to re-enter the Lotus Sutra from a different perspective. I've also been interested in how other practices can inform our understanding of the Lotus Sutra in fresh ways that may enable the practitioner to find new meaning for contemporary life.

“Yesterday you learned of the Eightfold Path.  Beginning today for the next 7 days try to focus on one of those eight right ways.  Make this the focus of your practice outside of your dedicated time reading and chanting.  You might pick Right Speech and then for the rest of the week try, to the best of your ability, to only engage in speech that, not only causes no harm, but encourages good.  Or you might pick another of the Eight Right Things.  Focus on one, maybe even write it on a card and tape it to your computer or bathroom mirror to remind you of your intention.  Actually this kind of setting your intention is engaging in another of the Eight Right Ways, that of Right Intention.  See how easy it is to do this practice, or at least try to do the practice.  If in the course of this week you should mess up or forget, please do not worry about it.  Use it as a lesson to advance your growth.”
Ryusho Jeffus, Lotus Sutra Practice Guide

“But practicing in and with a Sangha can provide us that lifeline. We can find a clever, or wise, or well-informed person who can understand the conditions of the road we are traveling, and encourage us.”
Ryusho Jeffus, Lotus Path: Living the Lotus Sutra - Volume 1

“The story of the Burning House is really about our practice of Buddhism.  We are constantly living in a burning house, a house of the sufferings of life.  Sometimes we distract ourselves from these sufferings by indulging in a variety of things, all basically misguided attempts to eliminate suffering but actually often contributing to more suffering.”
