My name is Chrissy Smith, and I live in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, UK.

My inspiration for The Caretaker was based on two main facts; firstly, that I briefly met a holocaust survivor once when I was a parish clerk which obviously moved me more than I realised at the time, and secondly, as a student during the seventies, my husband lived in an old converted mansion house on the edge of the small village of Sandridge!

I have woven these two facts into a supernatural story about a holocaust survivor who becomes the caretaker of Fairshot Court.

My working life has been as a secretary adapting the role to many different areas; publishing, government, NHS, construction, sales, marketing etc. I worked in publishing for a while as secretary to

Do some gardening or a chore and let your mind wander and inspiration may come. Alternatively you could read over what you've already written and another idea might be triggered, or you may find you've omitted something vital or perhaps a story line feels unfinished and further description or detail is needed. I can flesh out my characters and escape to another time and place, they almost become real to me, like friends. I am always sad to say goodbye once the book is finished but as I write that last line and it's so good it makes you weep with pleasure, then it's all worth it! (less)

The diaries of Alice Goldspink

I found some old diaries in an ancient suitcase which had been tucked away behind the rafters in the loft of my mother-in-law's bungalow in Lowestoft, Suffolk. I am attempting to transcribe these to help with a fictional novel I have been inspired to write of that time in our history. Any information anyone has of the post war years, requisitioning of houses, war department notices, dilapidation p Read more of this blog post »

The story line seemed a little bit 'Men in Black' to me and I found the line 'skinny white kids don't get the irony in Eminem' a bit irritating. Sadly, it wasn't a page turner for me, I found it a little muddled with too many characters, none of whom ...more

It was a sad start but I liked the mother/daughter relationship which developed after that, and the fact that the dog was given a personality was sweet! It was funny in places, but the feminism angle became a bit of a bore, i.e. male = bad, female = ...more

This is a fascinating window into the past of 1935 Alabama, where we learn how the community of Maycomb lived, how differing classes co-existed but in separate areas of the town. I loved the mystery surrounding Boo Radley and the hopeless poignancy s ...more
