Il suo sesto compleanno fa registrare due avvenimenti che in qualche modo segneranno la sua vita: il trasferimento a Busto Arsizio per motivi di famiglia e un Piccolo chimico che riceve in regalo.
A Busto Arsizio frequenta l'Istituto Tecnico Industriale – dove si diploma in Chimica industriale – e incontra Gabriella Olgiati, straordinaria insegnante che inculca nei suoi allievi la passione per le belle lettere e per la buona scrittura intesi come parte fondamentale della formazione di un bravo chimico.
