A Curious Triangle

The curious case of Domitian/Domitia and Julia.

The charge by the likes of Dio Cassius and Suetonius is that Domitian banished his wife Domitia for adultery then seduced his niece Julia, continuing the affair openly when Domitia returned.

“Looking through his fingers he saw Nero standing still, pale and shaking. “Husband?” Nero silently pointed to the door. Sporus stuck his head into the corridor, looking one way and then the next. He was going to turn back and ask Nero what had frightened him so, when he spotted what it was. Or rather what it wasn't. There were no Praetorian guards. Not one.”

“But then along came Rome’s seventh and (*spoiler alert*) last king. He possessed a truly fabulous name: Tarquinius Superbus. Superbus”
L.J. Trafford, How to Survive in Ancient Rome

“To ensure there is a standard twelve hours no matter what the time of year, the Romans simply change the length of the hour. In summer, therefore, a Roman hour can be up to thirty minutes longer than in the winter.”
