I wrote perhaps hundreds (thousands?) of speeches, press releases, news articles, whatnot. Everything I wrote took time, think-through, research, tries and retries. Which led me to the conclusion that all writing is hard work. So when I hear "Writer's block;" I think, "work harder"(less)

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Clever, creative, crazy, unconventional, and absolutely delightful. Those are some of the words that come to mind after reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. The author, a former New York magazine editor, lived in Savannah on-and-off for eight years, chronicling the comings-and-goings of so Read more of this blog post »

“In spring, 1937, of course, families still rode the rails because of the Depression, which everyone said was already in the history books as the worst ever. The jobs still couldn’t be found, at least for most people. Everett itself—the smaller, poorer, little brother lying north of Seattle—ached with the unemployed and the hopeless. The labor union tensions in the woods still festered and got bloody at times. But Skybillings—and the railroad logging shows of the Cascade Mountains—felt like they were, inch-by-inch, rebuilding America.”
Ronald Geigle, The Woods

“The fact remains that getting people right is not what living is all about anyway. It's getting them wrong that is living, getting them wrong and wrong and wrong and then, on careful reconsideration, getting them wrong again. That's how we know we're alive: we're wrong.”
Philip Roth, American Pastoral

“I shouldn't think even millionaires could eat anything nicer than new bread and real butter and honey for tea.”
Dodie Smith, I Capture the Castle

“How flat all sounds are at the seaside, flat and yet emphatic, like the sound of gunshots heard at a distance.”
John Banville
