When I'm stuck at a difficult juncture in a manuscript, I set the timer on my phone for 1-2 minutes and give myself "permission" to simply scribble, scrawl, or type anything at all, no matter how silly, discordant, outrageous or "dumb" the thoughts that bubble up may seem at the time. It's freeing to let the words and ideas fly, expecting the result to be unusable. The funny thing is I usually wind up with a nugget or two that, with refinement, becomes useful.

If I'm struggling with a rhyme or couplet when writing verse, I find it useful to visit thesaurus.com and sites with rhyming dictionaries--including ones that list rhymes in languages like Spanish and French!
