I have to stop and repair what I produce after every few paragraphs so I'll know what I wrote. Many of my errors defeat spell check, and might confuse me if I didn't correct them right away. On the bright side, though, this process makes me notice other things I could improve--word choices, sentence structure, etc. (And it certainly keeps me from making hot responses in social media.) So, even though it slows me down, all in all it may be making me a better writer.(less)

Beauty Sneaks Up on Me

While I waited for my car to have routine maintenance done, I escaped the noise in the waiting room and did my yoga practice next to the stone wall at the far end of the dealership parking lot. The wall gave me the illusion of privacy. I’ve always considered it an ugly wall—cement and random rocks. Then I noticed that some of those random rocks, up close, were full of tiny crystals.

This is a high-intensity book, almost too high intensity at first. I had to take breaks from it. That’s not a complaint, just an observation. The tension, urgency, and risk of the assignment Niki is on are huge. And then more danger piles on.

“Cram your head with characters and stories. Abuse your library privileges. Never stop looking at the world, and never stop reading to find out what sense other people have made of it. If people give you a hard time and tell you to get your nose out of a book, tell them you're working. Tell them it's research. Tell them to pipe down and leave you alone.”

“from Hum, Hum

Oh the house of denial has thick walls
and very small windows
and whoever lives there, little by little,
will turn to stone.

In those years I did everything I could do
and I did it in the dark—
I mean, without understanding.

I ran away.
I ran away again
