Hi S.L.!

Back in fall 2012, I was pretty much done working on my first book, a memoir about amnesia titled I FORGOT TO REMEMBER. I co-wrote it with Su Meck, helping her recount her life story. I had some time on my hands and was thinking of writing something about Don, because he was my brother in law. I ended up taking my family to Mayberry Days, the annual festival, and at some point along the way my literary agent persuaded me to change the focus from Don alone to the friendship between Andy and Don, which was a great idea. At first I was thinking of doing some kind of article, maybe for a magazine, but the project got so big, so fast, that before long it made sense just to pitch it as a book, so that's what I did. I hope you enjoy it!(less)

I highly recommend watching the Deadwood TV series while reading Peter Cozzens's terrific book. The show tells a rich Hollywood story based, rather loosely, on facts. Cozzens gives you the facts. And it turns out the real Deadwood requires little emb ...more

“On Valentine’s Day, John let himself into Steven Spielberg’s home, raided his refrigerator, and left a note. He partied into the night with the Pretenders, who had played at UCLA. After midnight, he telephoned Judy from Chateau Marmont. “Chrissie Hynde has passed out,” he said. “What should I do?” Call her road manager, Judy instructed coolly.”

“MONEY, MUSIC, and lust inspired Riley in equal measure.”

“Andy and his manager, Dick Linke, set up a meeting with Abe Lastfogel at William Morris. Andy told him, “Mr. Lastfogel, I’ve struck out in movies and now on Broadway, and I don’t want to go back to nightclubs, so maybe I’d better try television.” Lastfogel went to see Sheldon Leonard, the powerful producer of television’s Danny Thomas Show. He asked if Sheldon knew of Andy. Sheldon replied, “Yeah, he did a record, a funny record.” Lastfogel said, “He’d like to do television. Can you think of something for him?”
