The first time I visited Venice as a wide-eyed teenager, I knew I was supposed to buy Murano glass, but I had no idea why.

All I knew was that I was whisked to the famous “glass island” on an overcrowded, stinky boat. I waited behind two dozen American and Japanese tourists to pay an exorbitant price for a little glass fish—what a bewildering experience!

Still, it was the artistic traditions of the world that inspired me to study the past. Living in Europe and Latin America, I realized that in many places, centuries-old craft traditions are still living traditions.

So began my quest to discover craftspeople passing on a special kind of knowledge to the next generation.

Hi Heather,
Thanks for getting in touch. I apologize for this, but Goodreads made a mistake on this giveaway! Their system was supposed to randomly select one winner. It seems that they transposed the page count of the book (406 pages) for the number of winners. I was shocked to wake up one morning with the message that they had drawn 406 winners instead of one! That was not how the contest was supposed to go…

Due to the error, Goodreads should have sent you an email with some instructions for how you can download a free digital copy of the book. The last thing I want to do is disappoint readers, so I’m happy to offer you an ebook edition of The Painter’s Apprentice, which you can download to your preferred device.

If you didn't get the email, please send me a message directly at laura@lauramorelli.com and I'll respond with instructions.

I’m sorry for the poor experience. I understand that Goodreads is revising their giveaway system and I hope that they will be able to avoid errors in the future.

Best regards,
Laura(less)

As an art historian, I have had the pleasure to teach, research, and write about subjects for which I have a passion. What a job! I have always relished the hours in the library and love sharing new material with my students.

Early in my career I learned the craft of academic writing, a type of writing that demands rigor and a strict adherence to the conventions of humanities scholarship. After a while, though, the more I wrote, the more boxed in I felt. The conventions of writing for conference lectures and scholarly journals transformed the exciting topic of art history into something dry and inaccessible. I felt compelled to burst out of the box! Writing for a broader audience has given me the opportunity to share the thrill I felt when I first encountered art history.(less)

Have you ever dreamt of being a Medici?

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be a great patron of the arts–just like the Medici family of Renaissance Florence–read on.

In past centuries, patrons supported their writers and artists by engaging them directly. They welcomed them into their homes and around their dinner tables. They made paintings, sculptures, buildings, and great works of literature possible. Without patronage,

“In Venice, things not always as they first appear. I contemplate this observation from my post on the aft deck of one of Master Fumagalli’s gondolas, taking in the panorama of bridges, domes, bell towers, and quaysides of my native city. I row into the neck of the Grand Canal, and, one by one, the reflection of each colorful façade appears, only to dissipate into wavering, shimmering shards under my oar.”
Laura Morelli, The Gondola Maker

“Perhaps it's when we might lose it all that we finally gain an appreciation for things we once took for granted.”
Laura Morelli, The Stolen Lady

“Do the Elgin marbles or the Rosetta stone 'belong to Britain? These treasures have come to us at the Louvre through various circumstances; they have passed through many places and hands. They are not ours. We are only custodians. Our job is to protect and save them from damage and destruction. But they belong to all of us, all of civilization. They belong to the future.”
