On the dark ending for The Smuggler, it was more catharsis than anything coming off a very bad year. The world in which I wrote that book is one where humanity (Vestalians) have no planet, no hope beyond their brave Navy, and Allies. I wanted to show that hopelessness, not to celebrate it, but to give a message that, while crime can get you out of a situation, there are still greater forces beyond your control.(less)
