I am into keeping fit, but only because I know it is good for my long-term health and because I need to balance out my love for ice cream, chocolate and cheese – all of which I like snacking on while getting lost in a good book. Because as far as I am concerned, life would be boring without books to read and friends to talk about them with.

It's incredibly hard to get noticed as a writer - I'm still struggling to get readers to notice my books and the process can be/is agonisingly slow. But that doesn't mean you're not a good writer. So persevere and see every bit of progress as a victory.(less)

Having left behind the love of her life, Georgie faces the daunting prospect of marriage to a prince she's never met and will never love. As if that's not bad enough, a faceless faction intent on preventing the marriage taking place are determined to assassinate her before she ever makes it to the prince's side.

I've got this one all in my head and I can't write fast enough to keep up with the thoughts! By the time I'm done it should be packed full of adventure, humour and of course plenty of romance. But there's still a long way to go yet!(less)

When a book just won't behave

It's been an interesting year of writing for me. I've had a story I've been trying to write; it was supposed to be a parallel universe, which I was going to have a whole lot of fun with - I had so many ideas! But this story just refused to go along with my plans. And every time I sat down to write, it was such hard work and just wouldn't flow.

I'd go to bed at night and there would be all these sto Read more of this blog post »

“You should write because you love the shape of stories and sentences and the creation of different words on a page. Writing comes from reading, and reading is the finest teacher of how to write.”

“CUSTOMER: Which was the first Harry Potter book?
BOOKSELLER: The Philosopher’s Stone.
CUSTOMER: And the second?
BOOKSELLER: The Chamber of Secrets.
CUSTOMER: I’l take The Chamber of Secrets. I don’t want The Philosopher’s Stone.
BOOKSELLER: Have you already read that one?
CUSTOMER: No, but with series of books I always find they take a while to really get going. I don’t want to waste my time with the useless introductory stuff at the beginning.
BOOKSELLER: The story in Harry Potter actually starts right away. Personally, I do recommend that you start with the first book – and it’s very good.
CUSTOMER: Are you working on commission?
BOOKSELLER: No.
CUSTOMER: Right. How many books are there in total?
BOOKSELLER: Seven.
CUSTOMER: Exactly. I’m not going to waste my money on the first book when there are so many others to buy. I’l take the second one.
BOOKSELLER: . . . If you’re sure.
(One week later, the customer returns)
BOOKSELLER: Hi, did you want to buy a copy of The Prisoner of Azkaban?
CUSTOMER: What’s that?
BOOKSELLER: It’s the book after The Chamber of Secrets.
CUSTOMER: Oh, no, definitely not. I found that book far too confusing. I ask you, how on earth are children supposed to understand it if I can’t? I mean, who the heck is that Voldemort guy anyway? No. I’m not going to bother with the rest.
BOOKSELLER: . . .”
