The best advice I can give an aspiring writer is pretty cliché, but very, very true. Here it is: "Just write."

For years I desired to write a book. I entertained the prospect of "being" a writer and completing a book, etc. Then, one day in 2012, I "owned" what I had always known: the book will not write itself.

Writing "Journaling" was a process of just sitting down every day and pounding out a paragraph, or a couple of pages, or an entire chapter. Revisions were brutal, but necessary. I read the book at least a dozen times while revising it.

Writing is a lot of hard work, but totally worth it! So, what are you waiting for? Forget about yesterday and start writing today! You can do it.(less)

With regard to my website, I keep an Excel file full of article ideas. This way if I am pressed for time or lacking creative ingenuity, I'll just mine that file for ideas. When it comes to writing a longer work--such as an article for another website or writing a book--I use an outlining process. Basically, I spend a huge amount of time generating as robust an outline as possible. Then, when it comes to writing, I simply follow my outline and write about what I've got there. Its not perfect, but it keeps me writing.(less)

Thoughts on Sabbatical

About this time last year I approached our church’s elders with a request. Could I and our other staff pastor, Jesse, take sabbaticals in 2019? We endured a few years of heavily intense ministry (see “Welcome Back, Stranger!”) and our spiritual, mental, and emotional reserves were depleted. The elders granted the request and provided a month-long sabbatical for Jesse in early 2019 and a three-mont

“This is what you do when you journal. You are recording God’s grand, epoch-spanning redemptive story as it unfolds in your limited, temporal sphere of existence here on earth. Your journal has the potential to record the continuation of the Holy Spirit’s work in our world!”
Adam L. Feldman, Journaling: Catalyzing Spiritual Growth Through Reflection

“When Jesus put on flesh, He made human existence “sacred.” Thus, when you are inhabited by Jesus through His Holy Spirit, your life takes on the “sacred” characteristic as well. This does not mean that you become God or incapable of sinning like Jesus was in His incarnation. However, it does mean that something is qualitatively different about you at the core.”
Adam L. Feldman, Journaling: Catalyzing Spiritual Growth Through Reflection

“Daily: staying in touch with your life as it unfolds History: reconstructing the contours of your past Dialogue: journaling a “conversation” Pilgrimage: exercises to promote personal growth Bible study: analyzing and applying Scripture Dreams: recording your nightly images Musings: recording insights, thoughts, and reflections Family: marking key events in your family’s development Work: keeping notes and materials related to your job8”
