Cathy Holton continues to entertain readers with her stories of strong, intelligent women trying to survive in an often hostile world. The Boston Globe says “Holton has a lively, fluid style that shifts easily among the viewpoints’ of several characters and goes down as easily as sweet tea,” while Entertainment Weekly calls her prose “Sharp, witty, and warm.”

Although grateful for the critical praise, it is the enthusiastic response of readers who tell her they “laughed, cried, and let dinner burn” while reading one of her novels that inspires her most.

This is from Mark Holton, Cathy's husband:

Inspiration was never a problem for Cathy. Cathy drew upon everything in her life for story ideas, and always had at least a half-dozen projects in the works at any given time. As the daughter of a college professor, she moved constantly while she was growing up. Among her occupations during her life, she was a waitress, cowhand, paralegal, and an executive assistant in a fire investigation company. She raised three children, and volunteered for everything. She was a voracious reader, observer and listener, loved reality TV, and engaged in constant social activities with friends. Cathy was a veritable sponge, and had her ears and eyes open all of the time soaking up everything. She also loved hearing other peoples stories, and in addition to her own personal experiences, some of those stories became the kernels around which book ideas were developed. (less)

From Cathy's personal Journal:

The idea for The Rico Boys came from my personal experience with raising a son, watching how difficult it seems for young men to grow up these days, and the propensity for boys to create their own little worlds where they feel more powerful and in control. All these things came together in an Aha! moment while watching an episode of the Soprano's.

“I can’t just open myself up the way some people can. And down here, you’re raised a certain way. You’re taught to keep some things private, family matters especially. It’s just the way it’s done."

"Everyone worships the past but no one really wants to talk about it.”
Cathy Holton, Summer in the South

“Everyone has a different story, and you have to ask yourself what motivates people to see reality the way they do.”
