It turns out, the way you live says a lot about you. Daters notice — and love — small details that hint at personality, cleanliness, and creativity:

Clean and organized: 77% of respondents say a tidy home is an instant green flagBathroom sparkle: 75% notice a bathroom stocked with soap and a clean towelBook lovers unite: 63% are drawn to shelves filled with books, records, or artKitchen cred: 58% appreciate a kitchen that looks used and lovedPlant parent points: 41% love seeing thriving greenery

Even little touches — like made beds, neat shoes, and framed photos — can signal a partner who’s thoughtful, attentive, and maybe worth a second date.

Red Flags: What Makes You Bolt
Conversely, some home habits scream “run for the hills,” including:

Mess everywhere: Dirty dishes or takeout boxes (75%) and overflowing trash (59%) are instant turn-offsBathroom chaos: Dirty bathrooms (71%) and no shower curtain (53%) make daters think twiceFurniture fails: Folding chairs as primary seating (37%) or a mattress on the floor (51%) are major ick triggersOdor and oddities: Weird smells (66%) and neglected pets or dead plants (32%) are serious mood killers

For 34% of daters, these home habits have even ended relationships. Ouch.

Dream Homes: What Daters Secretly Hope For

When imagining their ideal partner’s pad, respondents dream big but cozy:

And let’s not forget the little luxuries: fireplaces, reading nooks, and even a great coffee setup can give you major brownie points.

Make It Date-Ready
Most daters (65%) admit they spruce up their homes before inviting someone over, usually by decluttering and cleaning. Want someone to come back after the first date? Fun games (33%), cute pets (22%), and a killer music collection (11%) increase your chances. Bonus points if you can start a fire…literally or figuratively.

Handy Is Hot
Turns out, being handy isn’t just practical, it’s sexy. More than half of OkCupid respondents (57%) call it a total green flag, and another 35% say it’s a nice bonus. So yes, your ability to fix a leaky faucet could help you fix your love life too.

Make Your Home a Green Flag

Your home can say a lot about you. Sometimes before you even get a chance to. Here are some quick tips to help your space feel date-ready and increase your Cuffing Season chances:

1. Keep it clean, but not clinical.

A tidy, organized home is a major green flag. Focus on key areas like the bathroom, kitchen, and living room. A little decluttering goes a long way. Using decorative baskets can help conceal a bunch of small items while appearing to look put together. Having a simple organization system that tucks clutter away is an easy way to make a great first impression.

2. Show your personality.

Books, records, plants, or framed photos add character and conversation starters. These touches make your home feel warm and lived-in. Don’t feel pressure to have the most perfect place, it’s where you live not a museum. Add pieces to your home that remind you of good times or create a relaxing atmosphere.

3. Cozy comforts win hearts.

Think soft blankets, comfy seating, and a stocked snack drawer. Small touches signal thoughtfulness and invite your date to relax. Not only do these things make your date more comfortable, but another way to make your home more relaxing for you to enjoy.

Over 1,200 OkCupid singles reveal how they’re dating this year, and what really matters most

Dating in 2025 isn’t about matching fast or falling harder. It’s about getting real, moving intentionally, and finding connections that align with your values (and maybe your star sign, too). We surveyed more than 1,200 singles on OkCupid to better understand how people are dating right now, and let’s just say: the vibe has shifted.

Here’s what’s in, what’s out, and what Gen Z and Millennials (aka 90% of our respondents) are thinking about when it comes to modern love.

Apps Are Still It

Despite what your one friend who met their partner at a dinner party keeps saying, dating apps aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they’re still the primary way people are meeting romantic prospects in 2025, especially among younger singles:

57% of respondents said they’re meeting people primarily through dating appsOnly 11% are meeting partners “in real life” (through work, friends, or events)And 38% are doing a mix of both

So no, you’re not the only one who hasn’t locked eyes across a crowded bookstore lately. You’re just dating in the 21st century.

Slower, Softer Dating Is the Mood

“Intentional dating” isn’t just a trending phrase. It’s a lifestyle. When we asked people to describe their current dating mindset, one thing was clear: gone are the days of rapid-fire flings and undefined situationships:

71% of singles said they’re looking for something meaningful, even if it takes time52% are open to what feels right but want clarity25% are dating slowly to protect their energy

Basically, dating with purpose is in. Ghosting and playing it cool? Out.

That also shows up in how people are managing their connections: 40% of daters are focused on just one person at a time. Not because they’re not getting matches, but because they’re getting serious.

Values First, Situationships Second

So what’s actually guiding people’s approach to dating this year? Spoiler alert: it’s not TikTok advice or reality TV.

When it comes to money, most daters aren’t looking for a specific income, they’re looking for ambition and alignment.

As for sex? It matters. A lot.

79% say sexual compatibility is either “very” or “extremely” important to relationship successBut that doesn’t mean people are rushing into those conversations. More than half (52%) of singles prefer to wait until it comes up naturally, while 21% talk about it after a few dates

Once in a relationship, the majority want a balance: 72% prefer a mix of spontaneous and scheduled sex.

So what does all of this mean?

Dating in 2025 is thoughtful. It’s emotionally aware. And it’s happening (mostly) on apps like OkCupid. Whether you’re figuring it out or already found your person, one thing’s for sure: there’s no “right” way to date. But a little clarity, intention, and maybe some Instagram sleuthing can’t hurt.

OkCupid and It’s On Us surveyed over 500 singles in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and as a dating app, OkCupid prioritizes safety and open communication for our community of singles. That’s why we partnered with It’s On Us to survey over 500 OkCupid users to discover what conversations are being had about sexual assault awareness and prevention, and what more can be done. In order to emphasize our commitment to learning more and providing resources, we granted three free Boosts to all users who reviewed sexual assault awareness tips and completed the survey.

The survey data revealed that daters are being more open and honest than ever before. Ninety-three percent of singles report being completely honest on their dating profiles, and 78% agree that it’s normal to discuss sexual likes and dislikes before hooking up. Even more encouraging, less than 1% of singles say they never talk about boundaries with a potential sexual partner (75% say they always do, and 24% say they sometimes do). Perhaps not surprisingly, Gen Z is the most likely to say they always do, at 82%.

And these conversations expand beyond being just between partners. Sixty-three percent of daters say they have open conversations with family and friends about sexual and domestic violence, with women being 10% more likely to do so than men.

However, there is still work to be done. When asked if colleges should be doing more to prevent sexual assault, 83% of participants said yes, with recent grads (25–34) being the most likely to agree at 93%. Furthermore, 72% of singles say the government should do more to prevent sexual assault (22% aren’t sure, and 6% said no). Women were 11% more likely to believe more should be done than men.

According to It’s On Us research, at least 1 in 5 women, 1 in 2 trans people, and 1 in 33 men have faced sexual assault at some point in their lifetime. Therefore, it is one of our top priorities to decrease these numbers by educating singles about the importance of safety and open communication. Let’s be real — 2025 isn’t exactly giving “chill.” With political tensions, social reckonings, wars, and AI creeping into our DMs, it’s no surprise that dating has become less about “What’s your favorite pizza topping?” and more about “Do you support reproductive rights?”

On Global Love Day (May 1st), we’re taking a moment to unpack what really matters to daters right now. Spoiler alert: it’s not just love languages and zodiac signs — it’s your politics, your values, your stance on AI, and how fairly you split a bill.

Politics: The New Dating Dealbreaker

We’ve entered the era of compatibility beyond chemistry. Forget red flags — if your politics don’t align, that’s the end of the thread.

According to OkCupid data, 6 in 10 women globally want their match to share their political views. In the United States, that number climbs to almost 70%. And it’s not just women — more than half of Gen Z (51%), Millennials (63%), and Gen X (64%) say they don’t want to date across party lines. Even Cupid is ghosting political mismatches.

And in the queer community? It’s even more pronounced: 8 in 10 LGBTQ+ daters say they’ll only date someone in their own party. Period.

Still, when we talk politics varies. Gen Z tends to hold off until date three (respect), while daters aged 36 to 45 are bringing it up within the first 10 minutes. Honestly, same.

Oh — and if you’re using your platform to speak up? That’s hot. 74% of queer daters find it attractive when a match advocates for political and social issues on social media.

AI: Proceed with Personality

Artificial intelligence is doing a lot these days — writing poems, coding apps, maybe even helping you choose the perfect opening line. But when it comes to dating, singles are still craving something real.

While AI-edited profile pics might look cool, 6 in 10 singles say they’re not into it — and that includes 55% of 18 to 25-year-olds and 56% of 26 to 35-year-olds who find them a bit of a turn-off. It’s not about rejecting tech entirely — it’s about keeping things authentic.

And that sentiment goes deeper: nearly 90% of younger daters say AI could never replace real human interaction. The message? Use the tools, but don’t lose the real you. Because in the end, it’s the messy, beautiful, complicated realness that people are here for.

Intentional Dating Is In

In a world that feels increasingly unpredictable, daters aren’t here to waste time: 82% of women, 73% of men, and 60% of non-binary daters on OkCupid are looking for their forever person. Not a fling, not a situationship — the person. And this isn’t a boomer mindset creeping in. More than 70% of Gen Z, Millennial, and Gen X daters are looking to settle down.

Even within the queer community, where traditional relationship models are often questioned, 65% say they’re ready for a forever love. Maybe it’s not about matching endlessly anymore — it’s about matching on what matters.

Let’s Talk Money, Honey

Gone are the days of gendered expectations around who pays. In 2025, it’s all about fairness from the first date to moving in together.

Before the appetizers hit the table, 68% of men and 55% of women think the person who asked should cover the bill. But 37% of women and 27% of men are also down to split evenly. The vibes? Equal effort, equal investment.

And in long-term relationships, 86% of men and 74% of women believe in dividing both financial and household responsibilities fairly. Gen Z is leading this charge — pushing for balance, accountability, and an end to the “default domestic” partner.

TL;DR: Values Are the New Vibes

Love in 2025 isn’t just about who gives you butterflies — it’s about who matches your morals. Whether it’s how you vote, how you pay, or how you show up for the world, daters want to build something meaningful. Something that lasts.

OkCupid data reveals the role political values and social issues play in today’s relationships

In 2025, it’s clear that love isn’t just about chemistry anymore — it’s about values. Recent headlines have sparked conversations about whether differing political beliefs are a dealbreaker in relationships. While some might argue that love should transcend political divides, data from OkCupid suggests that shared values are becoming non-negotiable for many singles.

Political alignment isn’t just a side note in dating — it’s a filter. On OkCupid, more than 1.2 million daters in the United States have added the “I’m Pro-Choice” badge to their profiles, signaling that reproductive rights are a top priority. In fact, 70% of women and 42% of men say they wouldn’t date someone who isn’t pro-choice. Among non-binary daters, that number skyrockets to 93%.

But it’s not just reproductive rights shaping the dating landscape. Marriage equality remains a top issue for singles, with 96% of 18-to-25-year-olds and 97% of 26-to-35-year-olds supporting it. Across all genders, 97% of women and 96% of men are aligned on this issue. When it comes to LGBTQ+ rights more broadly, 74% of Gen Z daters and 78% of Millennials on OkCupid actively advocate for the cause.

The #MeToo movement has also left a lasting imprint on dating expectations. Over three quarters of women (77%) and more than half of men (51%) wouldn’t date someone who doesn’t support the movement. The generational divide is equally telling: 55% of 18-to-25-year-olds, 68% of 26-to-35-year-olds, and 66% of 36-to-45-year-olds on OkCupid say that support for #MeToo is a dating prerequisite.

Gender equality is another major non-negotiable. A striking 86% of women and 67% of men say they couldn’t date someone who doesn’t support gender equality. When it comes to women’s rights more broadly, those numbers jump to 90% of women and 70% of men. Silent support isn’t enough either — 52% of women on OkCupid say that speaking out about racial equality is essential, not optional.

So, what does this tell us? Compatibility isn’t just about shared hobbies or whether you both love the same Netflix show. Today’s singles are seeking alignment on core values — issues that define how they engage with the world. Love isn’t blind; it’s politically conscious. And for many, the question isn’t “Do you believe in love?” — it’s “Do you believe in equality?”

After all, matching on what matters means more than just liking someone’s picture — it’s about aligning on the issues that matter most.

OkCupid matches people on what matters to them through in-app questions about dating, relationships, sex and everything that is top of mind for Gen Z and Millennial daters. So far this year, our matching questions have earned more than 250 million responses — and over 10 billion responses since OkCupid launched 20 years ago. These are the biggest trends we are seeing leading into cuffing season:

MENTAL HEALTH

Discussions around mental health are becoming more prevalent both in society and in dating, with singles prioritizing and discussing everything from self-care to therapy. On OkCupid, 99% of almost 1.5 million daters asked believe mental health is as important as physical health — and 94% of nearly 1 million singles are open to discussing mental health with their partner. Today, being open and vulnerable is a big turn-on.

RISE IN OPEN RELATIONSHIPS

Speaking of being open, this past summer there was a noticeable shift in attitudes toward open relationships. During the last few months, 34% of daters on OkCupid said they would consider an open relationship, up from 32% in 2022. Many people are now more open to exploring non-traditional relationship structures. Factors such as increased conversations around relationship dynamics and a greater emphasis on personal freedom may have contributed to this resurgence, indicating a growing acceptance of diverse relationship models.

This year, we added new matching questions to OkCupid to better serve people looking for ethical, non-monogamous relationships including:

This year, there has been a notable decline in interest in kink and BDSM activities. When asked, 38% of singles on OkCupid this summer said they are kinky, 6% less than we saw during summer 2021. Factors such as shifting social norms or a focus on emotional intimacy may have contributed to this trend, suggesting that individuals are prioritizing connection over adventurous exploration.

MONEY MATTERS

In the era of looking for a man in finance, financial responsibility and stability is playing a big role in dating on OkCupid. Women on OkCupid are 38% more likely to say finances stress them out — more than their job, politics, and family or friends — compared to men, and many daters are looking for singles who are fiscally smart. Daters who keep a budget of their finances get 25% more Matches and have 16% more conversations on the app than those who don’t.

POLITICAL VIEWS ARE NOT AS DIVISIVE (FOR SOME)

Despite people being passionate and vocal about their personal views, they are more open than previous years to have healthy, respectable conversations with romantic partners — and even date people who might not vote the same way. On OkCupid, 68% of respondents said it’s not a deal breaker if their date is voting for a different candidate than they are in the 2024 presidential election. But members of each political party feel differently about this. Almost 7 in 10 (68%) of liberals on OkCupid said it’s a deal breaker if their date is voting for a different candidate, compared to 30% of conservatives and 16% of moderates.

WOMEN’S SPORTS ARE A TURN-ON

Women’s sports are experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity, fueled by increased visibility and support through media coverage and social media platforms. This growing interest not only highlights the incredible talent and dedication of female athletes but also inspires the next generation to participate in sports — and it’s becoming a deal maker for singles. Daters on OkCupid who watch women’s sports are getting 59% more Matches and having 42% more conversations on the app than those who don’t.

Earlier this year OkCupid added brand new matching questions related to the election to see how singles felt about the issues driving people to the polls. Our matching questions received more than half a million responses, and revealed that not only are daters discussing politics on dates, they’re even willing to go with a match to vote.

This ⁦Election Day, daters on OkCupid won’t be ghosting the polls — and a date won’t stand in their way. When asked, 46% of daters said they are open to discussing the 2024 presidential election on the first few dates — and more than half (52%) of OkCupid respondents said they would even go to the polls with a date.

Singles are engaged…in the political process.

More than 3 million people in the United States on OkCupid said they are registered to vote — 84% of all respondents — and that voting is a big turn-on for them. In 2024, registered voters on OkCupid are getting 15% more Likes and 12% more Matches than those who aren’t. They also have 18% more conversations. And singles who are planning to vote in the upcoming presidential election (77% of Millennials, 64% of Gen Z) are also getting 17% more Likes.

Daters are open to differing views.

Despite people being passionate about their personal views, they’re still open to healthy debates and discussions with romantic partners. About 7 in 10 (69%) OkCupid respondents do not think it’s a deal breaker if their date is voting for a different candidate than they are in the 2024 presidential election. And 61% of singles could date someone who ‘s voting for the opposing candidate, with Gen Z (64%) being more open than Millennials (58%) and Gen X (62%).

Most people are voting the same way as they did in 2020, but it’s party dependent.

More than 7 in 10 (73%) daters on OkCupid plan to vote for the same party that they did in the last presidential election — but it depends on where you sit on the political spectrum. When asked, 92% of liberals, 86% of conservatives and 69% of moderates said they plan to vote for the same party they did in the last presidential election. Conservatives were 75% more likely to be voting for a different party in this election than they did in the last one compared to liberals, and moderates were the most likely to be voting for a different party.

Women especially are hopeful about a female candidate.

There’s been unease over the election, but a woman entering the race is calming nerves. In early-to-mid July 2024, 60% of OkCupid respondents expressed concern about the upcoming presidential election. That percentage dropped to 51% within 24 hours of Vice President Kamala Harris announcing her run for president. During that same timeframe, the percentage of women concerned about the election dropped from 66% to 48% — and concerned men went from 54% to 49%, while worried nonbinary daters went from 94% to 88%.

The dating app is using the chatbot to write OkCupid’s famous matching questions and share outdoor date ideas

Last year we released new in-app matching questions written by ChatGPT about everything from what you value most in a partner to how you can balance your own needs with the needs of a partner. Since then, daters have answered them more than 4 million times.

Now, as the weather gets warmer, activity on OkCupid is heating up as well. There’s already been 150 million first messages sent on our app this year, so we decided to tap the famous chatbot once again — this time to write new matching questions (that were already answered more than 100 thousand times at launch) and share date ideas to help singles navigate dating this summer.

62% of single women want to erase an ex from a photo

As the weather warms, people’s dating lives are heating up. This year, daters on OkCupid have already sent more than 100 million first messages — and almost seven in 10 of people on our app are looking for a long-lasting relationship.

Whether singles are preparing to dive into something casual or more serious, they’re looking through some of their favorite photos to add to their dating profiles — and unfortunately sometimes an ex appears in one of the best shots. So OkCupid is partnering with Photoroom, the world’s most popular AI photo-editor, to enable the hottest new dating trend for summer: ex-terminating, or the act of removing an ex from an otherwise cute pic.

About 6 in 10 (55%) Gen Z daters have photos where they want to erase a former partner. That’s why OkCupid and Photoroom have created a tool that lets singles erase their exes from their best selfies for good.

To find out daters’ unfiltered views about what photos they want on dating apps, OkCupid added brand-new matching questions, which were answered more than 250,000 times.

Most singles, it turns out, want to paint over unwanted parts of their past: some half of Gen Z (54%) and Millennial (50%) singles say they have a good photo of themselves that needs their ex erased. As for why: 43% say they don’t want to see an ex; 41% want to get over the breakup; and 16%want to use the photo on a dating app profile.

When it comes to their profile pics, the majority of OkCupid daters (58%) prefer an individual photo or selfie, 37% opt for a photo of them doing something they love and only 5% go for photos with family or friends.

When it comes to what photos they want to see from a match on a dating profile, almost 7 in 10 daters (67%) prefer individual photos, 17% want to see you doing a hobby or on vacation, 10% enjoy seeing you with animals, and 6% love photos with family or friends.
