So I tend to get inspired to write a story about new things I've seen or have been exposed too. As an example, I attended a lecture by the program manager of a new probe heading to Jupiter in the near future. During the course of that Q&A, he talked about the engineering challenges related to dealing with the radiation environment around the planet. This conversation sparked an outline for a new book I am working on related to living on a moon near a gas giant.

Having that basic scientific information to structure the outline helps keep the story believable enough that the reader can focus on the plot, rather than the environment.(less)

George Orwell
“Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout with some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.”
