I worked in a solicitor's office for nearly twenty seven years, before finally deciding that enough was enough. I now work part time as a secretary and during the summer season I'm also a guide in a castle. I have always been interested in languages and literature and encouraged by a couple of friends I decided to write my first novel, "McArthur's Country House Hotel", which I self-published on with Amazon in 2014. My second novel, "The Stuffed Giraffe's Head" also appeared on Amazon in March this year. One of my short stories, "The Choirboy" was chosen as a winner in a competition run jointly by Chichester Independent Authors and the Chichester Observer. It has been included in their anthology, "Write Across Sussex" which is available on A ...more

If I sit staring at the screen for too long, I just become frustrated and if I do write anything, it is usually rubbish.(less)

Hello Paul,

I have tried a giveaway on Amazon and although some people did download it, none of them wrote a review afterwards. I suspect that some probably just downloaded it because it was free and probably haven't even read it.

I have got a Face Book author page, but must admit that I'm not very good at putting messages on it. I'm never quite sure what to write on it! The same is probably true with my Twitter account, where I tend to retweet more than tweet.

I've also just set up a website using Wix, but I'm not sure if anyone has looked at it yet. I used Wix because I was able to set up a free site for now and then if business takes off, I can upgrade to a paid one. I've included a blog on that site. It's http://josiegilbert025.wix.com/j-a-gi..., if you'd like to have a look.

I think sometimes you just need a bit of luck, with the right person taking a chance on reading something you've written.

Write Across Sussex

Last winter I entered a short story writing contest run by Chindi, in conjunction with the Chichester Observer. Chindi is a group of local, independently authors, who share ideas, expertise and contacts to reach as many readers as possible in a cost-effective manner. The entries were judged by a panel of authors, who chose the best eleven to include in an anthology entitled "Write Across Sussex." Read more of this blog post »
