It's easy to write on days I feel like my brain is bubbling. On other days it's easier to say "ah, juggling day job, family, home, and man, I'm tired." And then nothing gets done. I think the wisest thing ever said to me by a producer many, many years ago was "give yourself permission to suck. Then write. Then rewrite." I try to remember that.(less)

Black Rose

Black Rose Black Rose by Arlo Z. Graves

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I picked this up on a whim and ended up devouring it. It fits as "Weird Western," and an interesting twist on the AI debate. Whether intended or not, I couldn't help think that.

Set in an alternate early 20th century, Black Rose depicts an America at war with machines becoming sentient through living silver, with gunslingers and bounty hunters Read more of this blog post »

Someone was going to write this book. I'm glad it was Max Allan Collins.

The dialogue is crisp (I should have written some down to quote later), the characterizations are vivid. Though this is a modern novel, it echoes the style of pulp writing. Coll

When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One by David Gerrold

Gerrold tackles AI and private equity with sensitivity and a few mistakes because he wrote it in 1972. Some of the sexual politics haven't aged well, but that seems par for the course of a certain era of science fiction and horror.
