I’ve always loved reading. I blame my mum, who took my brother and me to the local library every Tuesday. So I had to get through four books every week.

My dad, meanwhile, helped me escape the children’s section for the shelves stuffed with books I couldn’t put down: books crammed with aliens, spaceships and robots, or with wizards, magic and mayhem; books full of big ideas and huge questions. These are the tales that mean I’ve spent large parts of my life away with the fairies. Or the Nasqueron Dwellers.

You spend years and years writing stories. Eventually, you have one that’s good enough to show to the world.

But then you learn no one will publish sci-fi/fantasy/serious/slightly whimsical mash-ups. They aren’t like the latest bestseller, say literary agents. There’s no shelf for them in book shops, say publishers.

The internet points out, helpfully, that you are wasting your time. Stop writing, i Read more of this blog post »

Paul Auster
“Some people are able to tell a more or less truthful story about themselves. Others are fantasists. Their sense of who they are is so at odds with what the rest of the world feels about them that they become pathetic … Then, there’s the other extreme, the people who diminish themselves in their own minds. They’re often much greater people than they think they are and, often, much admired by others. Still, they kill themselves inside. Almost by definition, the good are hard on themselves – and the less than good believe they’re the best.”
