Michael Schmidt is a bestselling author, African human rights rapporteur, and investigative journalist with over 30 years in the field and a reputation for producing unique and challenging copy, having worked on some of South Africa's leading print titles including Sunday Times, Financial Mail, and Africa In Fact. Under the Rusted Rainbow: Perdition and Promise in the New South Africa (BestRed, Cape Town, due September 2015) covers the period 1994-2015, and like the previous volume is a collection of back-stories on how I covered certain themes, but this one is about conditions of exclusion in under democracy, from poor whites to Bushmen, fascists to illegal coal miners, witches to land claimants, who collectively make up the majority of our people.(less)
