Phillip Davis has been writing short stories, novels, poems, and plays for most of his life, although Peppermint Lightning is his first published book, and decidedly so, for reasons that are quite personal to the author. While in high school, he won awards for two plays that he authored, and later he completed the NaNoWriMo challenge three times, the literary equivalent to multiple Boston Marathons. Phillip was born in Waterloo, New York, but has made dwellings in Texas, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, and Tennessee, ultimately returning “home” to East Liverpool, Ohio. One of the things that is a real hallmark to me of good fiction is the depth and complexity of the world that I'm taken to. I have read mediocre stories that were still a pleasure to read because of the "world building" the author did. Personally, I'd love to visit Oz, Wonderland, or a galaxy far far away. And who wouldn't want to see Narnia or J.K. Rowling's version of England? I am fascinated by the word created by Rachel Caine in her Great Library series, though I'm not sure it sounds like a pleasant place to be. Arrakis from Frank Herbert's Dune holds the same intrigue. In short, create me a world different from my own, with its own mythology, its own cosmology, its own legends and history, and I'll gladly pay it a visit.(less)

The Fixer: Or How you Can’t Make Everything Better

File this under, “advice I’ll be better at giving than taking.”

This won’t be easy to read for some: You can’t fix everything. I balk at the thought too. I understand there are some things I don’t have the power to repair; relations in the middle east, economic inflation, terminal illnesses, but everything else? Clearly I’m exaggerating, but not as much as I wish I was.
