A native of rural Rhode Island, Benjamin quickly found power in literature, music, and art. Recognized by his writing mentors for his exceptional authorship, he was bestowed with the honor of Class Poet from his graduating High School class. From there, he spent time in the Marine Corps where he was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq with "New England's Own", 1st Battalion, 25th Marines. His work combines a vivid imagination with philosophy to confront the more difficult aspects of our shared human existence; suffering, loss, grief, and tragedy. ...more

Both are symptoms of writer's block.

A level of acceptance and resistance is necessary. Sometimes you have to shift gears - if you're stuck on prose, try some free verse poetry. Skip to another part of the story that you feel you've fleshed out more in your mind and come back later to the spot you were stuck on.

A software program like "Scrivener" is very helpful if you're a bit scatter brained or want to go from A to D to C to F and then to B. The thing about getting stuck is that you need to get unstuck. (less)

“Or just hurt people along the way?
A chaotic path
Of bitterness, trauma, and liquor.

Projecting my suffering
On anyone in proximity.
Letting them know
Our world is misery.”
Benjamin Fortier, Phantoms

“There are poems in this book that give praise to our military institutions. They salute the general officers and politicians that rightfully use our warriors as a tool for justice, peace, and stability. They honor the values of service, devotion, and moral courage in the face of adversity and brutality.”
Benjamin Fortier, Phantoms

“There are poems in this book that are meant to raise skepticism. They were written to question authority and explore uncomfortable truths about our status as “Democracy's Vanguard.” They shame the concepts of blind nationalism, the glorification of violence, and the warmongers that put our country’s bravest citizens in these predicaments.”
