The Eye of the Poet

Last night a colleague said, "I think for every 1,000 snapshots I take, one is a photograph." I reacted bemused and he explained, “It takes talent to compose a photo, otherwise you’re just taking pictures.”

I suppose, ultimately, it is all semantics, but I couldn't agree more.

Orson Welles said it well, "A film is never really good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet." The same applies to photography.

Try Not to Be Careful...

As we age and accumulate, conservation and security tend to take precedent. This is why it is vital to have children around.

"Practice not being careful. Experience the freedom this brings." (Practica no teniendo cuidado. Disfruta de la libertad que esto trae.) —Byron Katie

Believing is Seeing

On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux. (It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.) Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Perseverence

Two months into translating my book,
25 Lessons I've Learned, into Spanish, I am worn for the wear.

Yet, being ¾ into Shackleton’s great book—South, the journal of his escape from the icy hell of Antarctica—with each page I am prodded to press on in my own endeavor.

Hence, my thoughts steer toward perseverance today:

“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.” Dale Carnegie

“Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” —John Quincy Adams

“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” —Newt Gingrich

“Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance” —Samuel Johnson

South: the story of Shackleton's 1914-1917 expedition

The Great Teacher

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.

Winners vs. Losers

True winners do not allow defeat to deter them, for we are all losers sometime. What makes the difference is that winners accept their mistakes, and see them as challenges to do better. Those who ultimately succeed are bound to fail over and over again. Nonetheless and allthemore, they keep trying. So do not fear falling; just be afraid of not having the will to get back up again.
