I know at these times that too many "other things" are occupying my thoughts, so I get out of the chair and go for a walk. I deal with the things on my mind, and then get on with the solution for my story, and I ask God for help. I'll have to tell you there are days when I'm editing one book, writing another, and outlining another, and my brain is definitely on overload - I take a lot of walks!
Stop trying to write when you are worrying about the things that require your attention immediately - deal with those things and then go back to the keyboard. You'll find things go a lot smoother.(less)

Of course, the broader response is: NEVER GIVE UP! I know I sound like Winston Churchill!

I have a friend that tells me she wants to write, and she starts, and she stops! I tell her my advice is like the Nike commercial - just do it! I think she is too self-critical, and believes if the first few pages aren't perfect she shouldn't continue. How you begin a story doesn't mean it can't be changed! It will not be perfect - you may think of a better way to begin the story as you delve deeper. Before I start the first paragraph, I have an outline, and have already developed my characters and understand their motivations. I know them so well that I can tell you what they had for dinner! That seems to work for me.

Write a few chapters, set it aside for a few days and then read it again. If it is interesting to you, chances are it will be interesting to others. Ask the opinion of those that you know will tell you the truth, not what you hope to hear! Granted, that will be difficult, so try not to ask family members!(less)

Western Historicals

Writing western themed historicals leaves me in awe of the people who were brave enough to make the journey westward. People often ask me why I love the time period, and I say, how could you not! The people were brave, resilient and exemplified the American spirit.

I question if many today could have survived the hardships they faced. What do you think? Could you jump on the back of a horse, or joi Read more of this blog post »
