My wife and I enjoyed hearing his early experiences in WWII, about the incredible family history and deep California roots in our country’s history. We still have the bottle of Machado Wine that he gave us after he gave us a tour of the majestic historical building. He was indeed a gracious, multi-talented, multi-faceted, brilliant man. We enjoyed listening to his self-playing piano, too. What a rare treat that was.

My next book will be about the Ohka “Baka Bombs” used by the Japanese in 1945. Your father’s unique visual observation of on Ohka attack is part of the story. If you will a way to contact you I will send you a copy when it is finished.

My wife and I moved from Irvine to Texas in 2015 shortly after my father passed away. My 4th book (publisher July 2018) was about my dad’s time in a North korean POW camp.

My Ohka “Baka Bomb” book is now the main focus of my attention.

My sincere condolences to your family on your loss.

Today, on this Memorial Day we will be thinking of, and saying a prayer for, Mr. Fred Mechado,

A Tomb Called Iwo Jima

I recently published "A Tomb Called Iwo Jima", a story about the Japanese survivors of the battle for Iwo Jima.

I got the idea for the book in 2002 when I visited Iwo Jima for the first time and met Taro, the son of General Kuribayashi, the island's wartime commander. I also met a couple of Iwo Jima survivors that were with him.

I had my first formal interview with a Japanese Iwo Jima survivor was Read more of this blog post »

“Although once the center of activity for tens of thousands of men, the island is quiet except for JMSDF supply flights and visits by US Navy fighters from Atsugi that use the runway for landing practice. In addition to several hundred JMSDF personnel, the island is home to friendly feral cats, turkeys of unknown origin, songbirds, East African land snails, scorpions and centipedes.”
