For my Lotta Crabtree: Gold Rush Fairy Star book, I viewed a painting in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The artist had painted the figures of famous historical figures in San Francisco. One was a young woman with beautiful red curls. I discovered she was Lotta Crabtree, a famous entertainer who had performed for the miners during the Gold Rush. Lotta also gave to San Franciscans a fountain which stands today across from the hotel on Market Street. I researched her life and learned she was a gutsy gal who became a national star and America's first comedienne---and wrote her biography!(less)
