Alexander was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He lived on residence in Toronto, Ontario while attending the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto between 2006 and 2010. While there, he discovered his love of writing, spending much of his free time writing short stories, most of which were experimental studies, ranging from inspirational poems to dark tales, as well as utter nonsense. The concept behind one such story grew on Alexander to the point that he expanded it, arriving at his first novel, Lucifer, which is out now.

Alexander posts reviews to the books he reads on kosoris.com and regularly contributes to the Thunder Bay arts and culture magazine, The Walleye.

My favourite genre is, at a most general answer, literary fiction. So, while I wouldn't necessarily say that pure fantasy is what constitutes the stories closest to my heart, there happens to be a lot of overlap there. For example, with two of my favourites, Slaughterhouse-Five and Cat's Cradle, both are generally considered literary fiction, but they can both be classified as urban fantasy, and may even be considered science fiction by some.

To begin to answer the second part of your question, I think most of the joy I derive from literary fiction - and all good literature, for that matter - stems from the richness of storytelling that has grown over the centuries, with authors learning and building from their predecessors' work, still finding unique ways to build compelling narratives and making me stop and think about amazing things I had never even considered. I feel like reading such books helps improve my outlook on life.

Hopefully some of that was at least a bit helpful, and I hope to see you around town, Marc!(less)

Alexander Kosoris Big announcement today. I’ve been writing regularly again for a little while now, but it’s been different than what I’ve been posting in the past. I’ve been honing my skills at essay writing, and I think I’m about ready to start sharing, starting next week. The current plan is to post monthly, but I may do so more frequently if I get a bit of a build-up of finished pieces. (So far, each of my essays has taken quite a bit of reading, prep, and editing before it gets to the condition you’ll get to see, and the process definitely isn’t fast. I may get quicker eventually, but I suspect that my efficiency is unlikely to improve substantially on topics that require an in-depth reading and analysis of literature. This means that there are probably more obvious limits to the quantity of my posts, though hopefully not to the quality.)

I’m interested in writing about a wide variety of topics and issues, and I’m going to do my best to cycle through topics. So, if I hit on something that isn’t of great interest to you, hopefully that changes the following month. If you want to check out my essays, go to kosoris.com.

Alexander Kosoris Another author panel is nearly upon us! To all my Thunder Bay friends, come on out on Apr. 21, grab a beverage, and chat about writing. This one's going to be a good one!
