N.B. Roberts is the author of Halton Cray, her debut novel to the Shadows of the World series, inspired by Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.

Born and raised in Kent, United Kingdom, N.B. Roberts resides there with her fiancé and their daughter. Until recently she led the exciting work-life of software analysis/consultancy. Now a full time mother and part time writer, storytelling is a welcome larger part of everyday life. When she is not writing (washing clothes, feeding baby, etc.) she also enjoys reading, painting, dancing, pyjama days and chocolate.

While still giving nods to Jane Eyre, there are new characters mixing things up and more mysteries to unravel. It will be available later this year!(less)

I have playlists for when I take short breaks or am doing my research. If I’m planning to write something dark and/or poetic, I might listen to Radiohead, Bjork, Enigma, The Art of Noise, Kate Bush, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Fiona Apple… well, there are many that inspire me! I have a little obsession with buying movie soundtracks too, which always introduce me to new artists and sounds. Like you, I love 80’s music! :)(less)

“The term ‘fell in love’ is apt, because it implies there is pain in the discovery. I didn’t ‘land softly in love’.”
N.B. Roberts, Halton Cray

“You can’t expect any woman to be a lady if you’re not being a gentleman, and vice versa.”
N.B. Roberts, Halton Cray

“Sometimes Death lurks after them for days, weeks, or even months, waiting for their time... Sometimes it doesn’t, and I’ve often raced that omnipresent Reaper to one portion of its work.”
N.B.Roberts, Halton Cray

“They spoke almost as loud as Feeling: and that clamoured wildly. "Oh, comply!" it said. "Think of his misery; think of his danger — look at his state when left alone; remember his headlong nature; consider the recklessness following on despair — soothe him; save him; love him; tell him you love him and will be his. Who in the world cares for you? or who will be injured by what you do?"

Still indomitable was the reply — "I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself. I will keep the law given by God; sanctioned by man. I will hold to the principles received by me when I was sane, and not mad — as I am now. Laws and principles are not for the times when there is no temptation: they are for such moments as this, when body and soul rise in mutiny against their rigour; stringent are they; inviolate they shall be. If at my individual convenience I might break them, what would be their worth? They have a worth — so I have always believed; and if I cannot believe it now, it is because I am quite insane — quite insane: with my veins running fire, and my heart beating faster than I can count its throbs. Preconceived opinions, foregone determinations, are all I have this hour to stand by: there I plant my foot.”
Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

“If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.”
Daphne du Maurier, Rebecca

“The term ‘fell in love’ is apt, because it implies there is pain in the discovery. I didn’t ‘land softly in love’.”
N.B. Roberts, Halton Cray

“There's not a lot to do when you don't want to do anything.”
Noelle Blanche, The Omitted Place

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
Roald Dahl
